[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Carmi Johnson.

This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Gallivants Ferry Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

Carmi Johnson was born 20 Nov 1829 (per tombstone) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. I don't know if "Carmi" is his actual name, or a nickname. It was spelled differently in nearly every record I've found, so I'm not sure the actual spelling. His tombstone lists it as "Carmi", so that is probably accurate.

I don't know who Carmi's parents were. There are numerous suspects. That leaves the field wide open for finding his parents. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. I have had several researchers state that Carmi Johnson is a son of Meshack Johnson, but I have not seen any proof of this yet, so I'm not sure. It could be accurate though. It does fit based on circumstantial evidence.

In 1830, Carmi would have been about 1 year old or less, . so if listed, he would be in the "under 5" age category (born ca 1825/30). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

In 1840, Carmi Johnson would have been about 10 years old. So if he was enumerated on the census he would be in the age 10-14 category (born ca 1825/30) or possibly in the 5-9 category (born ca 1830/35). There were some Johnson households with an apparent son this age in 1840: Phillip Johnson (c1795); Allen Johnson (c1790/1800); Meshack Johnson (c1795); John Johnson Sr (c1780/90); James Johnson (c1795); John L. Johnson (c1787); William Johnson (c1793) and William Johnson Sr (1770/75) (his two sons this age are accounted for). That is quite a list, so it doesn't really help narrow down who Carmi's parents are. But we can probably eliminate all the ones who lived somewhere other than Gallivants Ferry Township.

Carmi Johnson married Sarah A. J. --- sometime before 1850 in Horry Dist, SC. They had no children as of 1850, so probably not married too long before then. She was born 24 Dec 1835 (per tombstone). Her maiden name might be "Skipper", but I'm not totally sure of the source for that.

Carmi and Sarah were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC not too far from James Johnson (c1795). They were about 20 households apart.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. They were very close to several other Johnson families (all Gallivants Ferry Township residents) including Light Johnson (c1828) (son of Meshack Johnson)  just three houses away.

** I have not yet checked for this family on 1900 and later census records.

Sarah died on 4 Aug 1905, and Carmi on 29 Feb 1910. They are buried at the Methodist Rehobeth Cemetery. (online at Horry County Historical Society).

Children

Carmi and Sarah Johnson had at least 8 children per the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records, and also cemetery records.

I have not found much data on any of the children, so I will not give them their own sections on this web page as of yet. See the register report below for what little I have on them. Any full birth and death dates are from the cemetery records.
