I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Joseph Johnson.

This family apparently lived in the section of Horry County that later became Dog Bluff Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

Joseph Johnson was born ca 1787/88 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

Joseph Johnson is a proven son of Joseph Johnston Sr (1755/65), and was named in Joseph's Will dated 21 Jun 1832 (in Horry).

For the 1790 census, Joseph Johnson would have been about 2 years old, so if listed, would be in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). He does seem to be with his father Joseph in Georgetown Dist, SC, Prince George Parish, in the "under 16" age group.

In 1800, Joseph Johnson would have been about 12 years old, so if listed on the census, he would be in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1784/90). His father Joseph (in Georgetown District, Waccamaw County, SC) had one male this age with him in 1800, but he should have two (Joseph and his brother John), so either this is a mistake, or I have one of their birth years wrong, or perhaps John was living elsewhere. This might just be a mistake.

Joseph Johnson married Charity --- sometime prior to 1810 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was born 1786/87 in SC, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that later became Horry County.

In 1810, Joseph Johnson would have been about 22 years old, so if listed on the census, he would be in the age 16-25 category (born ca 1784/94). His father Joseph did have two apparent sons this age with him in 1810, so Joseph Jr did seem to be home in 1810, even though he would have been married, and ought to be on his own at this time. It is possible that he was not with his parents, but living with another family (perhaps his in-laws), or just missed on this census.

In 1820, Joseph Johnson would have been about 32 years old, so he should be enumerated in the age 26-44 category (born ca 1775/94). His father Joseph Sr had no sons that age with him in 1820. His father was listed as "Sr" on this census, with a Joseph "Jr" listed on the same page. The only problem is that "Jr" was listed in the age 45+ category (born before 1775). This means that this Joseph Jr in 1820 was not the same person under study here, or else the census record is just wrong. Here is the listing just in case it is this Joseph, (and I think it is him, just with some mistaken enumerations):

1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1775)	Charity --- Johnson (1786/87) Wife
1 Female(s) 10-15 (1804-1810)	Annis JOHNSON (1807/08) daughter

There were two listings for a "Joseph Johnston" on the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC.** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations, so I don't know which of these was this Joseph Johnson. One was certainly his father, the other most likely Joseph Jr.

On 21 Jun 1832, Joseph's father Joseph Johnston Sr made his Will in Horry District, SC. He named his children, including Joseph who he left a "one Negro woman Philis". (Horry Co, SC Will Book A pg 65, transcribed and published online at the  Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

Joseph Johnson was not listed on the 1840 census in Horry. However, there was a Joseph Johnson in neighboring Marion County who is a perfect fit, and he is otherwise unidentified. I believe it is probably the same person. He was not listed near any of the Marion County Johnson families. He was next door to Ebenezer D. Skipper (Joseph's son-in-law), and just 2 houses from my ancestor Pinkney J. James (who lived near Mullins, in Reeves Township).

"Joseph Johnson Sr" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 80 acres and 2 slaves. His name was given as "Sr" because there were two other Joseph's (both younger) in Horry at this time, and both were of age. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Joseph and wife Charity were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC near several other Johnsons. They were next door to "Joseph Johnston Jr", who was next to Elizabeth, widow of William Johnson Sr. Joseph "Jr" was their son (William and Elizabeth's).

I did not find Joseph nor Charity on the 1860 census in Horry (nor Marion).

Children

Joseph and Charity had several children per the various census records, but only one has been positively identified so far.

Annis Johnson (c1808)

Unknown Son (1820/25)

Unknown Son (1820/25)

Unknown Daughter (1835/40)

Annis Johnson was born ca 1807/08 in Horry Dist, SC. The estate records of her husband (in Marion District) show that their children were "maternal" grandchildren of Joseph Johnson of Horry, so that must mean that she was a daughter of Joseph Johnson.

I did not find a census listing for Joseph in 1810, but Annis was with him then most likely.

In 1820, she was apparently with him in Horry, listed as age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10).

** I don't have the 1830 enumerations yet, but I suspect she was still home with her parents that year.

Annis Johnson married Ebenezer D. Skipper before ca 1831 in Horry Dist, SC. They moved over to Marion District sometime afterwards. Ebenezer was born ca 1808/09 in Marion District (per 1850 census record), or possibly in Horry. I don't know who his parents were.

They were listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC next door to her parents.

They were still in Marion for the 1850 census.

Ebenezer D. Skipper died in Marion District on 28 Jun 1850 (per estate records), leaving Annis and the children.

On 23 Nov 1852 James R. Hinds, Asa Godbold (as Administrator of W. Lambert, et al), creditors of E. D. Skipper, filed suit in the Court of Equity against Levi Legette pertaining to the Estate of E. D. Skipper. The records showed his death date, and the names of wife Annis, and children Iris Skipper Johnson, wife of John Johnson, Winney Skipper, Charity Skipper, Arthur Skipper, Ebenezer Skipper and Levi Legette, trustee. ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 50, Roll # 149, by Lucille Utley)

I did not find Annis, nor any of the children (except daughter Iris) on the 1860 or later census records. Iris was in Horry in 1860, 1870, and 1880 with husband John James Johnson.  There was a household in 1860 Horry that might be some of the children of E. D. Skipper, though none of the names are a perfect match. There was a household containing three apparent siblings: F. A. D. Skipper (male) age 24, Temperance Skipper, 26, and A. B. Skipper (male) age 14. This could be Delesly and Arthur Skipper (if his name was "Arthur B."), and one of their sisters. I'm not sure if this is them or not though.

Unknown Son (1820/25). Joseph Johnson had an apparent son this age with him for the 1840 census. ** He may have been with him in 1830 also, but I don't have that record. However, he was gone by 1850, so either moved out or died by then.

** I don't know who this son might be. There was a Joseph Johnson "Jr" (c1820) living next to Joseph and Charity in 1850, but I'm fairly sure he is a son of William and Elizabeth Johnson (William named his son "Joseph" in his Will).
