I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Hugh R. Johnson.

Hugh R. Johnson was born 7 Dec 1821 (per tombstone) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District.

I don't know what his middle initial of "R" stood for.

Sellers mentioned Hugh R. Johnson's family in his book, and gave some good information on him and his children. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, pages 356, 357, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

Hugh R. Johnson is a proven son of Samuel Johnson (c1791-1822) and Dorcas --- (thanks to Deryl Young for showing me the proof for this). This fact is proven by Samuel Johnson's estate records. (Horry probate bundle 6, package 6)

Hugh's father died in 1822, and I don't know where Hugh and his mother and siblings were in 1830 or 1840.

At some point, Hugh Johnson moved over to neighboring Marion District. He later lived in what became Hillsboro Township (present Dillon County), though I don't know if he lived there all along or not.

Hugh Johnson was listed on the 1850 census in Marion District by himself, with sizeable property. He was not listed near any other Johnson families. This census reports his birth place as "Marion", but that is probably incorrect.

Hugh R. Johnson married Margaret Fisk Woodberry ca 1850/52 in Marion District, SC. She was probably a cousin of his. She was born 11 Dec 1827 (per tombstone) in Marion District, daughter of William Woodberry (1788-1851) and Sarah B. Johnson (daughter of William Johnson Sr of Horry). This marriage is proven by William Woodberry's Equity records.

On 29 Dec 1853, a suit was filed in the Marion Court of Equity pertaining to the William Woodberry estate. The heirs were named, including "Margaret now wife of Hugh R. Johnson". ("Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 87, Roll # 269 by Lucille Utley)

Hugh and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion District, SC. Again, they were not listed near any other Johnson families.

For the Civil War, Hugh R. Johnson was listed on the roll of the "Last Company of Militia called into service", as a Private (listed as "H. R. Johnson"). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 646, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

Hugh and family were listed on the 1870 census in Marion County, in Hillsboro Township (present Dillon County). They were not listed near any other Johnsons.

Hugh and family were listed on the 1880 census, still in Hillsboro Township. Several black Johnson families were nearby, but no white Johnson families.

Hugh R. Johnson died in Marion County (now Dillon County), SC on 20 Aug 1884 (per tombstone) and is buried at the Johnson Cemetery in Dillon Co, SC.

** I've not yet checked the 1900 census for more info on this family.

Margaret Woodberry Johnson died on 24 May 1905 in Marion (now Dillon) Co, SC. (Diary of Rev. Simeon Campbell (1829-1912), page 47, Marion Public Library)

She is buried at the Johnson Cemetery in Dillon Co, SC.

Children

Hugh and Margaret had eight children per the various census records. One of these appeared to have died young. Sellers mentioned 5 sons and 2 daughters in his book (he left out the one who died young).

I don't have enough info on these children yet to give them their own sections. What I do have came from the 1860-1880 census records, and from Sellers book (mainly the names of their spouses).
