I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Samuel Johnson.

This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Bayboro Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Samuel Johnson was born ca 1775/94 (per 1820 census) or to narrow it down more, ca 1790/91 (per age of "about 31" as given on tombstone) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

I don't know who Samuel's parents were. There are numerous suspects. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

Assuming that he was born in what is now Horry, then he was probably with his parents for the 1800 census. In 1800 Georgetown District, Waccamaw County (which is present Horry County), there were several Johnson households, several with a child about his age. He would have been about 9 years old, so should be listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). William, Gilbert, Penelope, James, and Joseph Johnson all had sons in this age group.

In 1810, Samuel would have been about 19 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 16-25 category (born ca 1784/94) . Joshua Johnston, "Widow Johnston Sr", Joseph Johnston (1755/65), James Johnston and "Widow Johnston" had apparent sons his age with them in 1810.

Samuel Johnson married Dorcas --- sometime between ca 1810 and ca 1818 in Horry Dist, SC. Her name was shared by Deryl Young, as proven in Samuel Johnson's estate records. I don't know what her maiden name is.  (Horry probate bundle 6, package 6)

In 1820, Samuel Johnson was listed as a head of household in Horry District. It seems that this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

Samuel Johnson died on 27 Feb 1822 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. He is buried at the Beaty Burial Ground in Horry. His marker does not give a birth date, but says "age about 31". (Online at Horry County Historical Society web pages)

Samuel Johnson's estate records (shared with me by Deryl Young) give his widow as Dorcas, and his heirs (all minors) as Gilbert, Samuel, Elizabeth and Hugh, with Thomas A. Beaty as the guardian. (Horry probate bundle 6, package 6)

I don't know where Dorcas and the children were in 1830. She may have remarried by then. She married Thomas A. Beaty sometime after 1822.  ** Thomas A. Beaty was listed on the 1830 census in Horry, but I don't have the enumerations yet.

I did not find Thomas A. Beaty on the 1840 census, but I could have missed him.

Thomas A. Beaty was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 7,377 acres and 21 slaves. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Thomas and Dorcas and their children were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet, but they were on page 3B, household # 36.

I did not find them in 1860, though Dorcas was still alive then.

** I have not yet checked the 1870 census for Dorcas.

Dorcas died on 12 Jul 1875 (per tombstone) in Horry Co, SC. She is buried at the Beaty Burying Ground. (Online at Horry County Historical Society web pages)

Samuel and Dorcas had at least four children as proven by his estate records, and possibly one other per the 1820 census.

Gilbert L. Johnson was born ca 1817/18 in Horry Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). He was also named in the estate records of his father Samuel.

Elizabeth Johnson was born ca 1810/20 in Horry Dist, SC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). She was also named in the estate records of her father Samuel (in 1826).

I don't know who Elizabeth married, or if she died young.

Unknown Daughter (1810/20). Samuel Johnson apparently had a daughter this age with him for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but no daughter (other than Elizabeth) was named in his estate records (1826), so either this daughter died by then, or she wasn't a daughter, but a niece or just someone else residing with them in 1820 for some reason.

Hugh R. Johnson was born 7 Dec 1821 in Horry Dist, SC. He was also named in the estate records of his father Samuel. He later moved to Marion District (now Dillon County).
