I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Samuel C. Johnson.

This Johnson family apparently lived in what later became Bayboro Township of Horry County, SC.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Samuel C. Johnson was born ca 1817/18 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. I don't know what his middle initial stood for.

Samuel C. Johnson is a proven son of Samuel Johnson (c1791-1822) and Dorcas --- (thanks to Deryl Young for showing me the proof for this). This fact is proven by Samuel Johnson's estate records. (Horry probate bundle 6, package 6)

Samuel C. Johnson was apparently with his parents for the 1820 census (listed as age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).

I don't know where Samuel and his mother and siblings were in 1830. Samuel would have been about 12 years old, so if listed, he would be in the age 10-14 category (born ca 1815/20). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

In 1840, Samuel would have been about 22 years old, so if listed, he would be in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1810/20). Phillip Johnson (c1795) had an apparent son this age with him in 1840. Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) also had an apparent son that age in 1840. I doubt either of these was Samuel C. Johnson.

Samuel C. Johnson married Nancy --- sometime between 1840 and ca 1848 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name was.

Samuel C. Johnson was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for "Land and Negro returned in Marion District". I'm not sure if this means he was living in Marion, or owned land there, or what. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Samuel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC just two houses from his brother Gilbert Johnson (c1818).

Samuel and family were still in Horry for the 1860 census. He was not very far from Meshack Johnson (c1795), a possible Uncle.

Samuel C. Johnson died sometime between ca 1863 and 1870, perhaps due to the Civil War. I don't know if he served or not.

Widow Nancy --- Johnson was listed on the 1870 census in Horry County, in Bayboro Township with several children still home with her.

Children

Samuel and Nancy Johnson had six children per the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records.

Hugh E. Johnson (c1848)

Thomas W. Johnson (1850)

James F. Johnson (c1853)

Mary F. Johnson (c1855)

Virginia Johnson (c1860)

Samuel S. Johnson (c1863)

Hugh E. Johnson was born ca 1847/48 in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census in Horry.

I did not find Hugh in 1870. He may have died before then (perhaps due to the Civil War), or just moved away.

Thomas W. Johnson was born 21 Mar 1850 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in Horry.

Thomas W. Johnson married Elizabeth Sarvis (maiden name proven by tombstone) ca 1870/73 in Horry Co, SC. Elizabeth was born 5 Dec 1851 (per tombstone). I don't know who her parents were yet.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Horry County, in Bayboro Township, just 6 houses from his mother.

Thomas W. Johnson died on 28 Jul 1902 (per tombstone). Elizabeth Sarvis Johnson died on 9 Jun 1925. They are buried at Red Oak Cemetery in Horry County, SC.

James F. Johnson was born ca 1852/53 in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the  1860 census in Horry. He was not with them in 1870, nor found elsewhere. He may have died by then.

Mary F. Johnson was born ca 1854/55 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the  1860 and 1870 census in Horry.

She was not with them in 1880, so may have married by then, or perhaps she had died.

Virginia Johnson was born ca 1855/60 (entry in 1860 had no age) in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1860 census in Horry.

She was not with them in 1870, so may have married by then, or perhaps she had died.
