I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Gilbert L. Johnson.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Gilbert L. (or "D") Johnson was born ca 1817/18 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. I don't know what his middle initial stood for. In 1850 it was given as "L" (quite clearly), but an 1845 tax list shows "D" as middle initial. I didn't see the original record there, so it could be transcribed wrong or might be someone else.

Gilbert Johnson is a proven son of Samuel Johnson (c1791-1822) and Dorcas --- (thanks to Deryl Young for showing me the proof for this). This fact is proven by Samuel Johnson's estate records. (Horry probate bundle 6, package 6)

Gilbert Johnson was apparently with his parents for the 1820 census (listed as age "under 10", born ca 1810/20).

I don't know where Gilbert and his mother and siblings were in 1830.

Gilbert L. Johnson married T. C. --- sometime before ca 1839 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name, nor what the initials "T. C." stand for.

In 1840, Gilbert Johnson was listed on the Horry Dist, SC census. He was not very close to any other Johnsons, though Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) was on the previous page.

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820)	Gilbert L. JOHNSON (1817/18) s/o Samuel
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820)	T. C. Johnson (1817/18) wife
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	L. A. JOHNSON (1839/40) daughter

"G. D. Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 1000 acres and 10 slaves. I don't know for sure if "G. D." is the same person as Gilbert, but it seems likely. If it isn't him, I don't know who else it could be. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Gilbert and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC just two houses from his brother Samuel C. Johnston (c1818).

I didn't find any trace of this family in Horry for the 1860 census. They must have moved away somewhere. I also didn't find them in 1870 Horry.

Children

Gilbert and T. C. Johnson had five children by the time of the 1850 census.

L. A. Johnson (c1840)

L. M. Johnson (c1844)

John M. Johnson (c1846)

Eliza L. Johnson (c1847)

Gilbert D. Johnson (c1849)

L. A. Johnson was born ca 1839/40 in Horry Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and with them for sure in 1850, listed as "L. A." Johnston, age 10. I don't know what her initials stood for.

I did not find her on the 1860 census, nor her parents, so I don't know what became of her.

L. M. Johnson was born ca 1843/44 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census (age 6).  I don't know what her initials stood for.

I did not find her on the 1860 census, nor her parents, so I don't know what became of her.

John M. Johnson was born ca 1845/46 in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 census (age 4).

I did not find him on the 1860 census, nor his parents, so I don't know what became of him. There was a "John M. Johnson" in Horry in 1860, living with another family (James H. Norman and Caroline M. Norman). This John was listed as age 18 (c1841/42) and born in North Carolina. His age is off by a few years, and his birth place is off, so I have doubts that it is the same person. It could be though.

Eliza L. Johnson was born ca 1846/47 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census (listed as "E. L." age 3).

I did not find her on the 1860 census, nor her parents, so I don't know where she was then. I also don't have her on the 1870 census.

However, she was in Marion County for the 1880 census, residing with her brother Gilbert Johnson, listed as "Lizzie Johnson" age 34. "Lizzie" is a common nickname for "Eliza". She was still single in 1880.

Gilbert D. Johnson was born ca 1848/49 in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 census (listed as "L. D." age 1).  I don't know what these initials stood for, but I'm sure it was the same person as Gilbert, even though the "L" was clear on the census record.

I did not find him on the 1860 census, nor his parents, so I don't know where they all were that year.

Gilbert was in Marion County, SC for the 1870 census, residing with his future in-laws,  John and Penny Norton. They were in Reeves Township.

Gilbert D. Johnson married Eliza Norton in the 1870/80 timeframe. She was a child of John Norton and Penelope Lewis, born 1 Mar 1846. They were written up in "A History of Marion County, SC" by W. W. Sellers, 1902, pages 475 to 480. This same article mentioned that Gilbert Johnson was a nephew of Hugh R. Johnson.

Gilbert and wife were listed on the 1880 census in Marion, in Reeves Township. His sister Eliza was residing with them also. ** I don't have this census entry typed up yet.

** I Have not checked the 1900 and other census records for more data on them yet.
