I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Matthew Johnson.

This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Bayboro Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Matthew Johnson was born ca 1796/97 (per 1850 census) or ca 1799/1800 (per 1860 and 1870 census) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

I don't know who Matthew's parents were. There are numerous suspects. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

Assuming that he was born in what is now Horry, then he was probably with his parents for the 1800 census. In 1800 Georgetown District, Waccamaw County (which is present Horry County), there were several Johnson households, several with a child about Matthew's age. He would have been about 3 years old or less, so should be listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). William, Gilbert, Penelope, James, and Joseph Johnson all had sons in this age group.

In 1810, Matthew would have been about 13 years old (or 10), so should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1794/1800). Only two of the Horry District Johnston families had a male this age with them. They were Joshua and Joseph Johnston. This doesn't guarantee that one of these is his father, but it does make them prime suspects. Joseph left a Will naming his children, and Matthew was not one of them.

In 1820, Matthew Johnson was listed as a head of household in Horry District. He had a female with him who was much older than him. This could be a wife (if he was married prior to Susanna), or his mother, or an older sister. It could be Susanna also, if her age was listed wrongly on this record. However, it seems more logical that it was his widowed mother, or other older relative.

Matthew Johnson married Susannah --- sometime before 1827 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is. Susannah was born ca 1804/05 in NC, presumably in one of the neighboring counties such as Brunswick, Columbus or Robeson, though possibly somewhere else.

Matthew Johnson was listed on the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC. ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

Matthew Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Horry Dist, SC. He wasn't particularly close to any other Johnson families then. He was one page away from Phillip Johnson (c1795), a possible brother. ** I don't yet have the enumerations for Matthew's entry in the 1840 census.

"Matthew Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 296 acres and 3 slaves. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Matthew and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC. The nearest Johnson was Daniel Johnson (c1789) who was about 20 houses away, and Phillip Johnson (c1795) who was next to Daniel.

Susannah --- Johnson apparently died in the 1850/60 timeframe.

Matthew Johnson married Mantha --- ca 1850/60 in Horry District, SC. I don't know her maiden name. "Mantha" was often a nickname for "Samantha". She was born ca 1811/12 in NC. (I would guess in Columbus, Brunswick or possibly Robeson County).

Matthew and Mantha and daughter Rutilla were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. They were next door to Meshack Johnson (c1795), perhaps a brother. They were also next to Joseph J. Johnson, a son of Meshack.

They were still in Horry for the 1870 census, listed in Bayboro Township. They were about 20 pages from Anna Johnson, widow of Daniel (c1789).

Matthew Johnson died sometime between 1870 and 1880 in Horry Co, SC.

Mantha was listed on the 1880 census in Bayboro Township with a grandson John A. Johnson (c1863) living with her. I have not yet identified him. James Harley Johnson (1848) (son of Meshack) was next door to her. They were on the first page of the census, and there is a dark streak down the left of the page, covering the first half of all the surnames, making them difficult to make out.

** I have not yet checked for this family on 1900 and later census records.

Children

Matthew and Susannah had at least four children per the 1850 census. Their may be others also per earlier census records which I don't have yet. It does not appear that Matthew and his second wife Mantha had any children.

Dorcas Johnson (c1827)

Priscilla Johnson (c1830)

Matthew Johnson (c1832)

Rulitta Johnson (c1839)

Dorcas Johnson was born ca 1826/27 in Horry Dist, SC. ** Presumably, she was with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census records. She was home with them in 1850.

She was not with her parents in 1860, so probably had married or died by then.

Priscilla Johnson was born ca 1829/30 in Horry Dist, SC. ** Presumably, she was with her parents for the 1830 and 1840 census records. She was home with them in 1850.

She was not with her parents in 1860, so probably had married or died by then.

Matthew Johnson was born ca 1831/32 in Horry Dist, SC. ** Presumably, he was with his parents for the 1840 census records. He was home with them in 1850.

He was not with his parents in 1860, and not found elsewhere in Horry, so he may have died, or moved away by then.

Rulitta Johnson was born ca 1838/39 in Horry Dist, SC. ** Presumably, she was with her parents for the 1840 census records. She was home with them in 1850, 1860 and 1870.

If she ever married, it was after 1870.

** I have not yet checked the 1880 and later census records for her or the rest of this family.
