Urias (Zachariah) Johnson (c1815) and Nancy Ann --- of Horry Co, SC

This family apparently lived in what later became Dog Bluff Township of Horry County, SC.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Urias Johnson was born ca 1814/15 (per 1850 census) in SC, presumably in Horry District. I'm not sure if his name was "Azariah" (in 1840), "Urias" (in 1850), or "Uriah" (in 1860), or "Zachariah" (in 1870). Perhaps his name was actually Zachariah, and the others were just variations of a nickname based on Zachariah.

I don't know who Urias' parents were. There are several suspects in Horry District.

Assuming he was in Horry already in 1820. would have been about 5 years old then, so if listed on the 1820 census with his parents, he would have been enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). In 1820 Horry, there were five Johnston households with at least one male child this age. One of these could be his father: Allen, Jacob, James, Samuel or William Johnston. More research is needed to further narrow down this list. I know that William was not his father, but that leaves the other four as suspects.

In 1830, Urias would have been about 15 years old, so if listed, he would be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1810/15) or possibly in the 10-14 category (born ca 1815/20). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

Urias Johnson married Nancy Ann --- ca 1830/32 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1809/10 in SC, presumably in Horry District.

In 1840, Urias was listed on the census in Horry, though listed as "Azariah" or something like that. ** I have not seen the original, only a transcript, so I'm not sure if this is a correct reading of his name. He was on the same page with William Johnson Sr (1770/74).

Urias Johnson was not listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list. He was of age then, but probably owned no land (only land owners or slave owners were listed, apparently). (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Urias Johnson and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC. They were just a few houses from William H. Johnson (c1810), perhaps closely related.

Urias and family were still in Horry for the 1860 census. They were near several Johnsons, mostly members of William Johnson Sr (1770/74) family.

In 1870, the family was listed in Dog Bluff Township, but the census taker might have made a mistake. It appears that the head of household is a 5 year old child. I think he just put the house and family number in the wrong place. If I move it up one line, then daughter Ann is head of household. If I move it down one line, then Urias (listed as "Zachariah" here) is head of household, and Ann and her apparent child are listed with the previous family. For the sake of keeping them together, I made Ann head of household, but keep in mind this might not be correct. Check out the original record to see what I mean. Their son Zachariah was next door, but no other Johnsons were very near by.

There were a few young children with them, who were most likely grandchildren, but I don't know who their parents were.

Children

Urias and Ann had several children per the 1850 through 1870 census records. Some of the youngest kids were probably grandchildren instead, but I've kept them listed as children since I don't know who their parents are yet.

Mary A. Johnson was born ca 1831/32 in Horry Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was with them in 1850 (age 18) and in 1860 (age 24).

Nancy Ann Johnson was born ca 1832/33 in Horry Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was with them in 1850 (age 17) and in 1860 (age 22).

She was with her parents in 1870 also (age 31) and seemed to have a 5 year old son (Zachariah) with her. Either he was born out of wedlock, or she had married, and was widowed by, a Mr. Johnson. The 1880 census shows her as "single", but as the mother of young Zachariah.

Nancy and her son were in Horry for the 1880 census in Conwayboro Township. This record confirms that she was a single mother.

Rebecca Johnson was born ca 1833/34 in Horry Dist, SC. She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age 0-4, born ca 1835/40).

Unknown Son (1835/40). Urias had an apparent son this age with him in the 1840 census. He was not home in 1850, so possibly had died by then, or just moved out.

Unknown Daughter (1835/40). Urias had an apparent daughter this age with him in the 1840 census. She was not home in 1850, so possibly had died by then, or just moved out. This could be Sarah Johnson (c1846) who's age in 1850 and 1860 are drastically different. In 1860 her age puts her birth at ca 1838/39 which fits this category.

Olif (Olive) Johnson was born ca 1844/45 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census (age 5). She was with them in 1860 also (age 15).

Sarah Johnson was born ca 1845/46 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census (age 4). She was with them in 1860 also (age 21). This is a large disparity in her age. The 1860 age puts her birth at ca 1838/39.

Elizabeth Johnson was born ca 1847/48 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census (age 2). She was with them in 1860 also (age 18), and with them in 1870 (age 25).
