I (Marty Grant) am not related to Abraham Moore as far as I know. There is a slim possibility that he is related to my ancestor William H. Moore (1726) and a fairly good chance that he is related to my other Moore ancestor Burton Moore (c1756). Abraham's wife Lydia Stewart is my 1st cousin, 5 times removed.

Abraham Moore was born 27 Dec 1807 (source?) or ca 1804/05 per 1850 census, or ca 1806/07 per the 1860 census. He was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census).

Abraham Moore is a son of John Parker Moore (1765) and Millie Redmond. This is proven mainly by the fact that John was living with Abraham in 1850. There may be other proof as well.

For the 1810 census, Abraham would have been about 3 years old, so probably enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). I'm not sure where his father John was in 1810. Abraham's younger brother Isaac was born in 1809 in Buncombe, but the 1810 census shows only one John there, and he was listed by himself with no family. This could be the same John, and the census taker didn't find them at home, so left the enumerations blank, or it could be some other John.

For the 1820 census, Abraham would have been about 13 years old, so should be enumerated in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1804/10). His parents were in Haywood County that year, and did have one son that age.

In the 1820's, they moved into what is now Macon County, but was then just western Haywood. Sometime before early 1827, Abraham Moore married Lydia Stewart. No marriage record was found in Haywood County. Lydia was born 14 Jan 1807 (source?) in Buncombe County (per 1850 census), daughter of Jacob Stewart and Elizabeth Setser.

In 1828 a petition was filed by residents of southwestern Haywood County requesting the formation of a new county (Macon), and Abraham Moore was listed on the petition. He enumerated his family as having 1 male over 21 (himself), 1 male under 21 (son Andrew), and 3 females (wife Lydia, two unknown daughters?).

They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was listed next door to Mary Ann Stewart (Lydia's grandmother) and just two houses from Jacob Stewart, Lydia's father. They were also next door to Thomas Postell, who was married to Lydia's sister. Interestingly, they were just 12 houses from my ancestor Joseph Moore (1787), no known relation. 12 houses in a mountainous region could mean quite a distance between them though. I know Joseph lived in the Lake Toxaway Region (present day Transylvania County), which isn't far from where the Abraham Moore family lived, but separated by several mountains (and two counties now).

Abraham was listed as a voter for the 1835 Congressional Elections. He was listed as having voted in Macon County in Valley River Precinct. This is present day Cherokee County, so he may have temporarily moved into that area with his father-in-law Jacob Stewart who did the same at that time.

In August 1839 Court, Abraham Moore (and others, including his brother Isaac Moore) were listed as Insolvents (having not paid their taxes). Abraham owed for 156 acres and 1 poll tax (for himself). (Macon Co, NC Superior Court Minutes Jun 1838 - Sep 1855 page 54).

On 21 Jan 1840, Abraham Moore and Elizabeth Taylor witnessed a deed from James Walker to Abner Moore (1801) (Abraham's brother). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book C page 1450 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)

In January 1840 (no day listed), Archibald Vaughn sold Abraham More 297 acres. No landmarks mentioned. Witnessed by Hiram Ledford and John H. Ledford. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 203)

They were listed on the 1840 census in Macon County. They were not listed near any other Moores this time. They were apparently in the Sugar Fork area for he was just two houses from Elizabeth Bryson, widow of William Bryson. On the other hand, many of their other neighbors were known residents of Burningtown Creek, so this just shows the vagaries of census listings. You can't always assume that because someone is listed side by side, that they were actually neighbors.

On 2 Mar 1846, Abraham Moore and Andrew J. Moore (his son) witnessed a deed from John P. Moore (his father) to Thomas M. Angel. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 87)

On 20 Mar 1849, Abraham Moore and A. J. Moore (his son) witnessed a deed from David Peak to James Peek and David L. Peak. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 423)

Abraham and family were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. They were listed just six houses from Thomas P. Moore (1804), no known relation. Abraham was next door to my Aunt Elizabeth Grant (1799). Abraham had his widower father John Moore, and his widower father-in-law Jacob Stewart living with him.

(Macon Co, NC Deed Book G page 532, 592 from "Records of Macon County, N.C. 1849-1858 Deed Books F, G, H and I" Abstracted by Barbara Sears McRae, 1998. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "F" through "I" are taken from this book.)

On 12 Feb 1853, Abraham Moore received a State Land Grant of 297 acres in Macon County. No landmarks listed. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book G page 33)

On 16 Mar 1855, William Holbrooks of Macon sold land to John Setser and Abraham Moore, being 100 acres on Ellijay and Pine Creek. Witnessed by John Young and John Ammons Jr. I don't know who John Setser was, if related to Abraham or not, or perhaps just a business partner in land speculaton. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book G page 770)

They were still in Macon County for the 1860 census. Abraham's father was no longer there, apparently having died, but his father-in-law Jacob Stewart was still with the family. Joseph Carroll (c1832) was with them, relationship unknown, but I think he could be a nephew or cousin to Lydia.

Lydia Stewart Moore died on 23 Sep 1878 (source?) in Macon Co, NC.

Abraham Moore was listed on the 1880 census in Ellijay Township still. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Abraham Moore died 15 Dec 1881 (source?) in Macon County, NC. I don't know where he and his wife were buried.

Children

Abraham Moore and wife Lydia Stewart had 9 children as proven by the 1850 and 1860 census. I have tracked a couple of them somewhat through the census and marriage records, but have not followed them too far down the line. See the Register Report below for more information on them.
