[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Moore as far as I know. There is a slim possibility that he is related to my ancestor William H. Moore (1726) or my other Moore ancestor Burton Moore (c1756). There is a much better chance that I'm related to Jane Patton, but I do not know how she may be connected to my own Patton ancestors.

Quite a few years ago someone (Lawrence Wood, I think) shared a six page family history of this family. It was photocopied from some sort of publication, perhaps a Genealogical Society Quarterly, but I don't know which one. At the time I had no interest in this family, and did not try to find out where this came from. Although I can't quote the publication title, etc., I can say that the information was submitted by Mrs. Ruth Dodd Martin of Arizona and was supposedly the text of a family history written in 1887 by John Moore (1820), grandson of John Moore and Jane Patton. Therefore, if it was that close to the source, it is probably fairly accurate. I'll refer to that document for certain facts (cited as "1887 John Moore History"), primarily names and birth dates. I will not quote much else since I don't know how accurate all of it is. There are some contradictions in it. Some of the data is easily confirmed from other sources, and I have added to it with my own research in Rutherford and Macon County, NC.

John Moore was born 25 Jan (or Jul) 1762 (per 1887 John Moore History, both months are given, so I don't know which is accurate). I've seen no other source for this birth date, but this does match his census entries which work out to a birth of ca 1755/65.  John Moore (1820) stated that John (1762) was born in Ireland and came to America with his parents. Lawrence Wood (deceased) told me that it was more likely that John was born in Lancaster Co, PA, but I do not know which of these birth places is more accurate. Thomas P. Moore (son of John) stated on the 1880 census that his parents were both born in South Carolina.

The 1887 record does not give John Moore's parents, but it does say that John's father (no name given) came from Ireland with one brother (name not given). Lawrence Wood told me that he believed John's parents were Walter Moore and Nelly Oats, though I don't recall how he determined that. It could be accurate, but I don't know for sure.

Whether born in Ireland or Pennsylvania, apparently John Moore had moved to York District, South Carolina by 1786, for he married Jane Patton there on 24 Aug 1786 (or 1783). (Both dates given in 1887 John Moore history).  The 1786 year works better with the first child born later in 1787.  Jane Patton was born 30 Jul 1766 (per 1887 John Moore history) in South Carolina (per 1850 census), presumably in York District or what later became York (in 1785), but was then part of old Craven County, SC.  Jane's parents were not listed in the 1887 history, but Lawrence Wood (or someone else) told me her parents were Thomas Patton and Margaret Erwin. I don't know if this is accurate or not. It would explain the name of two children: "Margaret Erwin Moore" and "Thomas Patton Moore". I am also a Patton researcher, but at present am still a novice on that line, so I have no information to add.

Their stay in South Carolina didn't last long after their marriage, for they were in what is now Buncombe County, North Carolina very shortly afterwards. Apparently (per the 1887 history) they lived in the Swannanoa area. This was Burke County until 1791 when Buncombe was formed. There were other Moores in that area, but I don't know if any are related.

They were listed on the 1790 census in Burke County, NC in the 11th Company. They were listed between Matthew Patton (presumably a close relative of Jane's), and William Graham (who was a Swannanoa Resident also, see my Graham pages). A Thomas Patton was just a few houses away, possibly her father. There were no other Moores in that Company, but plenty of Pattons.

In 1791, Buncombe County was formed form Rutherford and Burke, including the section where the Moores (and Pattons) lived.

They were still in Buncombe for the 1800 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living, though presumably still in the Swannanoa region.

Sometime between 1804 and ca 1807, John and family moved from Buncombe to Burke County, though I don't know exactly where in Burke they lived, but I would bet somewhere along the Rutherford County border region.

I have not yet done a thorough search of Buncombe County or Burke County records for more information on John Moore. Both counties are burned and many early records are lost, but some are extant.

They were still in Burke in Feb 1810 (when daughter Mary was born there), but was listed on the 1810 census in neighboring Rutherford County. They might have lived in the border region, or else they moved after Mary's birth. There were seven John Moores listed on the 1810 census in Rutherford, and two listed as John "Sr". I have identified the correct one, I think, based on census enumerations that fit this Johns known family. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

For the 1820 census, John and family were still in Rutherford. As in 1810, there were several John Moores listed, but I believe I have identified this one as the one shown as "John Moore, C. Creek". The "C. Creek" probably refers to Catheys Creek were he lived, though it might have been for some other creek such as Camp Creek.

John Moore died on 12 Nov 1828 (per 1887 history) in Rutherford County.

Jane Patton Moore was listed as head of household on the 1830 census in Rutherford County. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

Jane and her children moved a few counties westward into Macon County, North Carolina before 1833 (perhaps as early as 1831) There were several Moores already there, but I know of no relationship to any of them.

Jane was not listed on the 1840 census in Macon County, but there is a listing for Mary Moore with a woman about Jane's age. I think this is probably Jane with her daughter Mary D. Moore (1810) listed as head of household, I could be wrong, but it seems reasonable.

Jane and daughter Mary were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. They were surrounded by Jane's children. Son John Moore was 2 houses away, daughter Elizabeth Moore Hood was 3 houses away, and daughter Sarah Moore Clark was 4 houses away.

Jane Patton Moore died on 1 Apr 1856 (per 1887 history) in Macon County. She was buried at First Methodist Church in Macon County.

Children

John Moore and wife Jane Patton had 10 children as listed on the 1887 John Moore history. These children seem to be well supported by census and other records. The 1887 history listed 10 children, with birth dates for each, but only listed spouses for 3 of the children (the rest I have identified from Rutherford and Macon marriage records). This list only had one middle name included, but I've got middle names from Lawrence Wood for the other children.

Armenella Oats Moore was born 25 Jul 1787 (per 1887 history). I don't know where she was born, but presumably in either York District, South Carolina or in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. Her full name was given in the 1887 history. Lawrence Wood said she was apparently named for her paternal grandmother Nelly Oates (wife of Walter Moore). I have not confirmed that that was her grandmother's name.

She was apparently home with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages given, born before 1790), and still apparently home in 1800, aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90). She was not home in 1810, so probably married or dead by then.

The 1887 Moore history did not give a spouses name for her, and I have not found a marriage record for her in Rutherford County or Burke County. She may have married in Buncombe County, and there are no early marriage records extant for that county.

I have no further record of her. She either married or died in the 1800-1810 timeframe.

Margaret Erwin Moore was born 11 Apr 1789 (per 1887 history), in North Carolina (per 1850 census), presumably in Burke (now Buncombe) County, North Carolina. Her full name was not given in the 1887 history. Lawrence Wood said her middle name was "Erwin", which means she was apparently named for her maternal grandmother Margaret Erwin (wife of Thomas Patton). I have not yet confirmed that that was her grandmother's name.

She was apparently home with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages given, born before 1790), and still apparently home in 1800, aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90), and still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94). She was not home in 1820, so probably married or dead by then.

On 6 Dec 1812, Silas R. Melton obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford County to marry Margaret Moore. James Moore (her brother) was bondsman. This marriage was also mentioned in the 1887 history, though no details were given (no dates, etc.) Silas was born ca 1780/90 (per 1830 census) or ca 1790/91 (per 1850 census), though this disagrees with his earlier records.

They were listed on the 1820 census in Rutherford County just ten houses from her parents. Their household contained a few "extra" people whose ages would pre-date their 1812 marriage, so it is possible that Silas was married before and these were children from that marriage, or these could be other relatives living with them. There is a marriage record in Rutherford for a Silas Melton and Peggy McCurry dated 19 Apr 1804. I'm betting this is the same Silas, and that his first wife died sometime prior to December, 1812.

In the early 1830's, Margaret's mother and most of Margaret's siblings moved to Macon County, NC, but apparently Margaret remained in Rutherford, for she was still there for the 1840 census. No Moores were nearby, but they were listed between Jo. Melton (possibly his brother?) and E. McCurry, probably related to Silas's first wife.

According to the introduction to the 1887 history (presumably written by Mrs. Martin, who submitted it), Silas R. Melton and family left Rutherford ca 1845 and moved to McMinn Co, TN where they are buried at the old Dodson Cemetery near Etowah.

The above statement seems to be correct, for I found them listed on the 1850 census in McMinn Co, TN (along with several other Meltons, all probably related). * I had found a widow Margaret Melton, aged 60 in Rutherford Co, NC in 1850, and originally thought it was Margaret Moore Melton, but apparently it isn't, though her name, age, and children's ages match (children match up well with 1820, 1830 and 1840 census records). Silas and Margaret of 1850 McMinn have an 18 year old girl with them, but she may be a grandchild instead of a child for her age does not match up with any of their children as of the 1840 census.

I have not followed the family beyond this point.

Elizabeth Moore was born 19 Oct 1792 (per 1887 history), in Buncombe County, North Carolina (per 1850 census). Her name and birth date were given in the 1887 history, but no additional information on her, such as who she married, or her death date.

She was apparently home with her parents for the 1800 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94), and still home in 1820, (age 26-44, born ca 1775/94). She still seemed to be home in 1830 (age 30-39, born ca 1790/1800). She was not home in 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have identified her marriage, for on 21 Mar 1833, William Hood obtained a marriage bond in Macon County, NC to marry Elizabeth Moore. The bondsman was her brother Tilenius Moore, and the bond stated she was the daughter of John Moore, deceased. William Hood was born ca 1775/76 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents were. William had apparently been married before, for he was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County with apparent wife and children. I don't know who his first wife was, but she must have died before 1833.

They were not listed on the 1840 census in Macon, nor elsewhere in Western NC as far as I can find.

They were in Macon for the 1850 census, next door to sister Sarah Moore Clark and just 3 houses from Elizabeth's mother.

I was unable to locate them on the 1860 census. They were no longer in Macon County.

James Moore was born 19 Jul 1794 (per 1887 history), in Buncombe County, North Carolina (assumed, since older and younger siblings born there). His name and much additional data was given in the 1887 history. The author of that history (John Moore) was a son of James.

He was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), but gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.

I did not find a marriage record for them, but in the 1887 history it shows that James Moore married on 10 Feb 1818 to Elizabeth Blankenship. She was born 22 Feb 1796, daughter of Elisha Blankenship and Susan Ross (all per 1887 history). I'm assuming they married in Rutherford County, for I did find Elisha Blankenship on the 1820 census there.

Their were three James Moores listed on the 1820 census in Rutherford, two of which are good matches for this family. I don't know yet which (if either) of these is this same James Moore. Both had 4 members, 1 apparent husband, 1 apparent wife, and 2 children (one boy and one girl, both under 10).

According to the 1887 history, they moved to Georgia in 1822, and from there to Blount Co, TN by 1824 where they remained. I have not followed up on this family in Tennessee.

Sarah Moore was born 12 Jan 1797 (per 1887 history), in Buncombe County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). Her name and birth date were given in the 1887 history, but no additional information on her, such as who she married, or her death date.

She was apparently home with her parents for the 1800 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), but gone by 1820, so probably married or dead by then.

I found several marriage records for Sarah or Sally Moores in Rutherford, but one stood out as a likely match. After some research, I am now quite sure this is this same Sarah Moore. Here are the facts.

On 17 Oct 1820, Hiram Clark obtained a marriage bond in Rutherford County to marry Sally Moore. John Clarke and James W. Carson were bondsmen. Now, the reasons I'm sure this is the same Sarah is based on two big pieces of evidence. One, Hiram Clark was bondsman for the 1826 marriage of Sarah's brother John Moore. The second big piece is that Sarah Moore Clark also moved to Macon Co, NC (after being widowed) and lived next door to her mother and siblings. Another fact is that Hiram Clark was a neighbor of John Moore in 1820. This is not direct evidence, but is extremely solid circumstantial evidence. Sarah, wife of Hiram Clark was the same age as this Sarah Moore, so I'm sure they are one and the same.

Hiram Clark was born ca 1794/1804 (per 1820 census). I don't know who his parents were.

They were listed on the 1820 census in Rutherford County just two houses from Sarah's parents.

They were still in Rutherford for the 1830 census, though there was also a Hiram Clark listed in neighboring Burke County. I mention this because their son Hiram (Jr) was born ca 1829 in Burke County (per the 1850 census). I'm reasonably sure the one in Rutherford is this same Hiram and wife Sarah, but the birth place of Hiram Jr certainly raises some questions. Unfortunately, this census (Rutherford) was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

Apparently, they moved to Tennessee by ca 1835 (based on birth place of daughter Sarah), and from there to Macon County, NC to join her mother and siblings by 1840. At some point in that same timeframe, Hiram Clark died. I don't know where, whether in TN, or Macon Co, NC.

Sarah was listed as head of household on the 1840 census in Macon County, NC, two houses from her mother.

Sarah was listed on the 1850 census in Macon, next door to sister Elizabeth Moore Hood and 4 houses from her widowed mother. For some reason she was listed as "Susannah" instead of "Sarah", but I'm sure this is the same person.

John Moore was born 30 Apr 1799 (per 1887 history), in Buncombe County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). His name and birth date were given in the 1887 history, but no additional information on him, such as who he married, or his death date.

He was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1790/1800), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), and still home in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.

On 9 Jan 1826, John Moore obtained a marriage bond to marry Katherine Watson. Hiram Clark (brother-in-law) was bondsman. Catherine was born ca 1796/97 (per 1850 census) in Rutherford Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know who her parents are, but she may be a sister to James Watson who married John Moore's sister Jane Moore.

Catherine Watson is apparently somehow related to Louisa McGaha (or McGaughey) born ca 1798 in Rutherford. I would guess they were siblings, except for the different last names. Perhaps they are half siblings, or that either Catherine or Louisa was married before and widowed. I mention this because Louisa seems to have lived with the John Moore family for many years. It seems certain that she is not John's sister, for she was not mentioned in the 1887 Moore history.

They were listed on the 1830 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living.

Catherine Watson Moore died sometime before ca 1864.

John Moore married Margaret Guyer on 4 Nov 1864 in Macon County. She was born ca 1809/10 (per 1870 census), somewhere in NC. I'm not sure if Guyer is her maiden name, or if that was a married name and she was widowed. I get the feeling that she was not previously married, for some Guyers were living with them who were about the same age as Margaret, so possibly younger siblings.

They were listed on the 1870 census. Some Guyers were in the same household, but listed under a different family number. These could be Margaret's siblings. They were children of Phillip and Sarah (---) Guyer, so perhaps Margaret was also.

Jane Moore was born 20 Dec 1801 (per 1887 history), in Buncombe County, North Carolina (assumed, since siblings before and after her were born there). Her name and birth date were given in the 1887 history, as well as the fact that she married James W. Watson. According to the history (if I'm interpreting it correctly), she remained in Rutherford, though her children wound up in Macon with the rest of her family.

She was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10), and still home in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804), and still home in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

On 12 Aug 1834, James Watson obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Jane Moore.

They apparently returned to Rutherford County after marriage. They were listed on the 1840 census in Rutherford. An older woman (born ca 1760/70) was with them. This could be James' mother, or possibly even Jane's mother Jane Moore (1766), though I think she was in Macon instead in 1840.

They were still in Rutherford for the 1850 and 1860 census. I don't have these entries typed up yet.

Jane was listed as head of household on the 1870 census, so apparently James died in the 1860's. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I didn't find Jane on the 1880 census.

Thomas P. Moore was born 22 Jul 1804 (per 1887 history and tombstone), in Buncombe County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). His name and birth date were given in the 1887 history, but no other information was given, such as who married, date of death, etc.

Thomas P. Moore married Elizabeth Huggins on 8 Feb 1828 in Rutherford County. They moved to Macon County, NC. See their own page for additional information.

Tilenius Moore was born 2 May 1807 (per 1887 history), in Burke County, North Carolina (per 1850 census). His name and birth date were given in the 1887 history, but no other information was given, such as who married, date of death, etc.

Tilenius Moore married Nancy S. Cochran on 18 Jul 1831 in Rutherford County. They moved to Macon County, NC. See their own page for additional information.

Mary Davenport Moore was born 12 Feb 1810 (per 1887 history), in Burke County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). Her name (but not middle name) and birth date were given in the 1887 history, but no other information was given, such as who married, date of death, etc. Lawrence Wood (I think) told me her middle name was "Davenport".

Mary was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1800/10) and still home in 1820, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), and still home in 1830, age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15).

She moved with her mother to Macon Co, NC in the early 1830's.

Mary was listed as head of household on the 1840 census in Macon County. Her mother seems to be with her.
