Mary (---) Watson was born ca 1774/75 per her age
on the 1850 census (75). Her 1860 entry gave her age 84
which is pretty close. Im assuming that Mary wasnt born a Watson, but was a widow of a Mr. Watson who died before the 1850 census. I could be wrong about this though. In 1850 and 1860 she was living with David Benson (c1806) and his wife Anna (c1818). Other records prove that Anna is a Watson too, so is Mary her mother? That would be my first guess. A second guess would be that Mary Watson was an unmarried Aunt. Unfortunately it is just speculation right now. Mary is almost certainly connected to the other Watsons of Bladen County. David Benson and family were listed next to Noah Watson (c1795) in 1820 and 1830. Noahs parentage isnt known for certain, but he could be a son of either William Watson (1770/74) or James Watson (c1778). Who was Marys husband? That is assuming she was a widow of a Mr. Watson. Her Mr. Watson died before 1850 for she was apparently widowed on that census. It looks like he died before 1840 too for David Benson had a female with him that year who is probably Mary Watson. She wasnt with them back in 1830 so perhaps her husband was still alive then. Assuming Mary is the mother of Ann Watson Benson (c1818), then she must have been married before ca 1818, presumably in Bladen County. William Watson (1770/74) and James Watson (c1778) were in Bladen in 1810, 1820, 1830 and William was still there in 1840, James was missing that year, but back by 1850. Williams wife is unknown, but census analysis puts her birth at ca 1780/84 and her death before 1840. This doesnt fit well what we know about Mary (---) Watson (c1775). James Watsons wife was also born ca 1780/84 per census analysis, and James was still alive in 1850, but with no apparent wife at home. It is possible he wasnt widowed, but separated from his wife, though this doesnt really fit otherwise. There is only one other possibility, and it doesnt quite work either. Jesse Watson (bef 1775) was in Bladen in 1820, and very near William and James. His apparent wife was also born before 1775 per that census. However the 1820 census is the only record I have on Jesse. Furthermore they had no children at home in 1820, and Ann Watson (c1818) should have been with them if they are her parents. This means there is no clear location for Mary Watson on the 1800, 1810, 1820 or 1830 census. In 1840 she seems to be with David Benson. | Children of Mary (---) Watson. It would appear that Anna Watson Benson (1818) is a child of Mary Watson, though perhaps not. They are certainly closely related since Mary was with them in 1840, 1850 and 1860. |
