Armijah H. Johnson (1821) and Eliza --- and Mary A. --- of Horry Co, SC

This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Gallivants Ferry Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

Armijah H. Johnson was born 14 Jan 1821 (per tombstone) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. I don't know what his middle initial stood for.

I don't know who Armijah's parents were. There are numerous suspects. That leaves the field wide open for finding his parents. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations for Horry Dist, SC. If I did, I could possibly narrow the list of suspects somewhat based on who had male children about his age then.

He was listed next door to Meshack Johnson (c1795) in 1850. Meshack could be considered a suspect for his father. I have had several people inform me that Armijah IS a child of Meshack, but so far, no one has shared any proof of this, however it could be true.

In 1830, Armijah would have been about 9 years old, so if listed, he would be in the 5-9 age category (born ca 1820/25). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

In 1840, Armijah H. Johnson would have been about 19 years old. So if he was enumerated on the census he would be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1820/25). There were three Johnson families in 1840 that had an apparent son this age: Phillip Johnson (c1795) (but his son that age is accounted for); Meshack Johnson (c1795); William Johnson Sr (1770/75) (but his two sons that age are accounted for). That really only leaves Meshack as a prime candidate.

Armijah H. Johnson married Eliza --- sometime just before 1850 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is. She was born ca 1816/17.

Armijah and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC next door to Meshack Johnston (c1795), perhaps his father.

Eliza --- Johnson apparently died sometime between 1852 and 1854 in Horry Dist, SC.

Armijah H. Johnson married Mary Ann --- between 1852 and 1854 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is. She was born 27 Aug 1830 (per tombstone).

Armijah and Mary were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. His two oldest children were listed last, making me think they were from his first marriage, and the rest from his second marriage. It is also possible that these two older children were not his, but a niece and nephew instead.

They were still in Horry for the 1870 census, listed in Gallivants Ferry Township. They were next door to Margaret Johnson, widow of John A. Johnson (c1823), perhaps a brother of Armijah's.

Armijah H. Johnson was a Militia officer, apparently. His tombstone lists him as a "Colonel".

He died on 30 May 1871 (per tombstone) and is buried at the Johnson Cemetery in Horry Co, SC.

Mary Ann and several of the children were together for the 1880 census in Gallivants Ferry Township.

Mary Ann died on 19 Oct 1895 (per tombstone) and is buried at the Johnson Cemetery.

Children

Armijah and his first wife Eliza may have had two children before she died. He and his second wife Mary Ann had at least seven children (as of 1870), perhaps more born after that.
