[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to John A. Johnson.
Special thanks to Stacy Lowe for data shared on this family.
This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Gallivants Ferry Township.
The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.
John A. Johnson was born 29 Jul 1822 (per tombstone) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. I don't know what his middle initial stood for.
I don't know who John's parents were. There are numerous suspects. That leaves the field wide open for finding his parents. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations for Horry Dist, SC. If I did, I could possibly narrow the list of suspects somewhat based on who had male children about his age then. Stacy Lowe, a descendant, thinks John might be a son of Matthew Johnson. This might be true. John did name one of his sons "Matthew". More research is needed.
He was listed just a few houses from Meshack Johnson (c1795) in 1850. Meshack could be considered a suspect for his father. I don't think Meshack is his father though, but he could be.
In 1830, John would have been about 8 years old, so if listed, he would be in the 5-9 age category (born ca 1820/25). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.
In 1840, John A. Johnson would have been about 18 years old. So if he was enumerated on the census he would be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1820/25). There were three Johnson households with an apparent son this age in 1840: Phillip Johnson (c1795) (who's son this age is already accounted for); Meshack Johnson (c1795); and William Johnson Sr (1770/75) (his two sons this age are accounted for). That only leaves Meshack as a prime suspect, though this doesn't guarantee that he is the father.
John A. Johnson married Margaret A. --- sometime ca 1840/41 in Horry Dist, SC. Stacy Lowe reports that Margaret's maiden name was Crawford. This may be correct, but I don't know what the evidence for that is yet. Margaret was born 14 Jun 1824 (per tombstone). I am also a Crawford researcher, so she is of interest to me also. See my Crawford pages for more on that surname in Marion and Horry.
John A. Johnson was listed on the 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 271 acres and 1 slave. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)
John and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC not far from Meshack Johnston (c1795), perhaps his father.

John A. Johnson died on 4 Dec 1862 (per tombstone) and is buried at the Johnson Cemetery. (online at Horry County Historical Society).
Margaret and some of their children were listed on the 1870 census, in Gallivants Ferry Township. They were next door to Armijah H. Johnson (c1821), perhaps a brother of John's.

Margaret Crawford Johnson died on 2 Mar 1909 in Horry. She is buried at the Johnson Cemetery. (online at Horry County Historical Society).
John and Margaret Crawford Johnson had at least 8 children per the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records.
Margaret Susannah Johnson (c1857)
Mary E. Johnson was born ca 1840/41 (per 1850 census) or 18 Sep 1840 (per tombstone, if that is the same person) in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census (age 9, listed as "M. E.").
I'm not totally sure that M. E. Johnson and "Mary E. Johnson (1840)" are the same person, but it seems like they are. M. E. Johnson was home with parents in 1850, but gone by 1860, so probably had married or died by then.
There was a Mary E. Johnson who married W. P. Hardwick ca 1850/60 in Horry Dist, SC. He was born 3 Nov 1826 (per tombstone). I think this Mary E. and "M. E." are one and the same person, but I could be mistaken.
** They were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. I don't have their entry typed up yet. They were next door to Henry L. W. Johnson (1835), son of Daniel Johnson (c1789). They were not anywhere near the John A. Johnson family.
** I have not traced this family into the 1870 and later census records.
W. P. Hardwick died 14 Sep 1906, and Mary E. Johnson died 26 Aug 1911 and both are buried at Methodist Rehobeth Cemetery in Horry County. (Online at Horry County Historical Society web pages).
Sarah M. Johnson was born ca 1844/45 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She was gone by 1870, so probably had married someone, or had died by then.
Eliza T. Johnson was born ca 1846/47 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She was gone by 1870, so probably had married someone, or had died by then.
William F. Johnson was born ca 1850 (age 3 months in 1850) in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. He was gone by 1870, and I did not find him living anywhere in Horry. He may have died in the 1860's (perhaps due to the Civil War), or else he moved away.
John Q. Johnson was born ca 1851/52 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.
John Q. Johnson married Joannah --- ca 1870/74 in Horry Co, SC. I don't know what her maiden name was.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Horry Co, SC, in Bayboro Township.

Matthew H. Johnson was born ca 1853/54 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.
** I have not checked the 1880 and later census record for more on this family.
Margaret Susannah Johnson was born ca 1856/57 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census.
** I have not checked the 1880 and later census record for more on this family.
Dorcas L. Johnson was born ca 1860 (age 3 months in 1860) in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1870 her middle initial as "M" instead of "L".
** I have not checked the 1880 and later census record for more on this family.
