I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of Benjamin and Mary (---) Johnson.
This family resided in the Temperance Hill and Buck Swamp section of Marion County.
Benjamin Johnson was born ca 1775/84 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a son of Samuel and Mary (---) Johnson. This is proven by Benjamin being named as one of the heirs of Thomas Johnson (his brother) in an 1813 deed (described below).
Benjamin Johnson was probably home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the age "under 16" category (born ca 1774/90).
In 1800, his father Samuel only had one apparent son with him, age 16-25 (born ca 1774/84). This could easily be Benjamin, or one of his brothers. There is no way to be sure which it was.
Benjamin Johnson married Mary --- sometime between ca 1800 and 1810. Mary was born ca 1794/95 in SC, presumably in what later became Marion County. I do not know Mary's maiden name yet.
On 5 Apr 1804 Samuel and Mary Johnson (his parents) sold Benjamin Johnson 100 acres (for 10 pounds), land on the south side of Buck Swamp. Witnesses were William Allen and Samuel Johnson (Benjamin's brother). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 64, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)
On 23 Apr 1807, Benjamin Johnson (and Thomas Moody) witnessed a deed from Samuel and Mary Johnson (his parents) to Jesse Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C, page 371, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)
Benjamin Johnston was listed on the 1809 Voter list in Marion Dist, SC.
Benjamin Johnson was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC, just two houses from his brother Sherrod Johnson.

On 25 Aug 1810 Benjamin Johnson and Jesse Moody witnessed a deed from Samuel Johnson Sr (his father) to Sherod Johnson (his brother). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 239, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)
Benjamin Johnson was listed on the 1811 Marion District tax list and taxed 14 cents.
On 11 Nov 1811, Samuel Johnson Sr (his father) sold Benjamin Johnson 376 acres (for $100) on the south side of Buck Swamp. Witnesses were Thomas Johnson (Ben's brother) and Roger Roberts. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 66, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)
For the War of 1812, Benjamin Johnson enlisted as a Private in Captain Elisha Bethea's Company, 5th Regiment SC Militia, serving from 29 Jun 1812 thru 29 Sep 1812.
Benjamin's brother Thomas Johnson died ca 1813, and on 17 Jul 1813, his brothers and sisters sold their interest in his tract of land to Samuel Johnson Jr (who was also an heir). They were listed as his heirs in this fashion: Mary Johnson, Sherid Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, John Turbeville, William Turbeville, Unity Woods, Robert Moody, Jessey Bryan and Enos Tart. They sold their share to Samuel Johnson (Jr) for $305. Witnesses were Thomas Moody and Roger Moody. This deed proves the entire Samuel Johnson family pretty well. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 271, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)
Benjamin Johnson was listed on the 1814 tax list for Marion District, SC and taxed 63 cents.
Benjamin Johnson was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where he was living, nor who her neighbors were. (There was another Benjamin listed also, but apparently a little bit younger).

Benjamin Johnson was listed on the 1824 Marion Tax List and taxed $3.76.
Benjamin Johnson died sometime before 4 Jan 1830, for on that date his brother Samuel Johnson was made Administrator of his Estate. Documents in his Probate file name his heirs as widow Mary Johnson, children: Solomon Turbeville and wife Milly; Samuel Johnson, Asa Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Carey Johnson, David Johnson, Mary Johnson and Martha Johnson. (Probate Roll # 416, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 249).
Widow Mary Johnson was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where she lived, nor who her neighbors were.

I did not find Mary Johnson on the 1870 census, so she may have died by then. I did not find any Equity nor Probate records for her.
Sellers spoke of this family, in a vague way, but I think what he said helps a little bit. He was referring to the Johnsons of Temperance Hill and he mentioned Carey, David and Samuel as being descendants of this family. He did not say their ancestors name, but other records prove they are children of Benjamin and Mary:
"In former times there was another family of Johnsons in the Temperance Hill and Buck Swamp region, of prominence and standing, but by death and emigration they have dwindled to only a few. Old Enos Tart's wife, "Susannah", was a daughter of one of these old Johnsons. The mother of old John and Absalom Turbeville was another daughter, and, doubtless, there were others of that generation, but the writer has not been able to get them in any traceable shape. The late Samuel, Carey and David Johnson were descendants, also Hardy and Zeno, and, perhaps others, all from the same stock. These descendants, as known to the writer, are and were good honest men, respectable citizens all of them. Samuel Johnson, whose wife was a Turbeville and still survives, was a most excellent citizen, died childless. Carey and David had families, more or less large; also Hardy and Zeno. David Johnson left, I think, two children, who are now among us. ..." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, page 540)
Benjamin Johnson and Mary had at least 8 children, as proven by his probate records. Census records may show a few other children, who, perhaps, died young.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Benjamin Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and apparently still home in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). She was still apparently home with her widowed mother in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10), and still home with her in 1840 (age 30-39, born ca 1800/10).
This daughter was not with her mother in 1850, so possibly married or dead by then.
This could be either Elizabeth or Mary Johnson, both of whom were named in the 1830-1832 estate records of Benjamin Johnson. I have no additional data on either of them, so I don't know what age group they would be in.
Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Benjamin Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20) and apparently home with her widowed mother in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but gone by 1840, so possibly married or dead by then.
This could be either Elizabeth or Mary Johnson, both of whom were named in the 1830-1832 estate records of Benjamin Johnson. I have no additional data on either of them, so I don't know what age group they would be in.
Samuel Johnson was born ca 1814/15 in Marion Dist, SC. He was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records. Samuel was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but he did not seem to be home with his widowed mother in 1830. He was old enough then to be off in school, or living with other relatives.
I did not find Samuel on the 1840 census either. He was not with his widowed mother then.
Samuel Johnson married his cousin Mary Turbeville in March 1843 (date given in her obituary) in Marion Dist, SC. Mary was born 14 Aug 1826 (based on her age given in obit.) in Marion District, SC. Mary was a daughter of William B. Turbeville and Penelope A. Lane. (William B. Turbeville was a son of William Turbeville and Mary Johnson, and Penelope Lane was a daughter of James Lane and Mary Lee). Sellers mentioned that Mary was a child of William Turbeville, and it is also proven by other sources.
Samuel and Mary were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC just a few houses from his widowed mother. They had three children with them, presumably theirs, although Sellers and Mary's obituary both said that Samuel and Mary had no children. Of course that could mean no children that survived. It is also possible that these 3 children are not theirs, but I think that they are.

Samuel and Mary were listed on the 1860 census in Marion District, with his widowed mother Mary residing with them, and three other people also. Mary Turbeville (c1845), who is probably Samuel's niece; Nancy Martin (c1810), listed as "Domestic", so possibly not related, and John Watson (c1835) (son of Kinion Watson), no known relationship. It appears that Samuel and Mary's children had all died by 1860.

Samuel Johnson left a Will dated 19 May 1887 naming his wife Mary, nephews Franklin, William, Hugh G., and David Johnson. He appointed Stephen S. Turbeville (his brother-in-law) his Executor. Witnesses were John Wilcox Jr, T. C. Moody and John Turbeville. The Will was proven 4 Jun 1887. (Probate Roll # 2083, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume III", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 221).
Samuel Johnson died in Marion Co, SC on 31 May 1887 (as reported in his wife's obituary in 1910 in the Dillon Herald).
Mary Turbeville Johnson was listed on the 1900 census in Marion County, in Moodys Township, residing with her brother Stephen Turbeville. She was listed as a widow, and born August 1826. Her children columns were blank (number of children born, and number of children still living). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
In 1910, Dillon County was formed from the northern part of Marion County, including Moodys Township. ** Mary Johnson was probably still with her brother Stephen in 1910, but I have not checked yet.
Mary Turbeville Johnson died on 3 Sep 1910 at the home of her brother S. S. Turbeville. (This is all according to her obituary in the Dillon Herald dated 22 Sep 1910). She was listed as having married Samuel Johnson in March 1843, who died May 31, 1887. She was 84 years and 20 days old, and had no children. Survived by two brothers and one sister (names not given). (From "Dillon Herald" dated 22 Sep 1910, published in "Pee Dee Queue").
Asa Johnson was born ca 1816/17 (per 1860 census) or ca 1821/22 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records. Asa was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but he did not seem to be home with his widowed mother in 1830. He was old enough then to be off in school, or living with other relatives.
Asa Johnson married Hannah --- before ca 1839 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name, though I (and others) have speculated that she might be a Lane, but no direct proof of that. My reasoning for thinking "Lane" (and I suppose everyone elses also) is that a Lane was residing with them in 1850. Of course, this does not prove any relationship.
Asa Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed between Willis Finklea Jr and B. (Barfield) Moody.

Asa and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, next door to brother David Johnson, and a few houses from brother Samuel Johnson and a few from his widowed mother Mary Johnson. Joseph Lane was residing with Asa and family, prompted some researchers (myself included) to assume that he was a brother to Hannah. However, this assumption could be far off the mark. Also note that Asa is listed as "Ashley" for some reason.

Apparently both Asa and Hannah died in the 1860/70 timeframe, for I did not find them on the 1870 census, but several of their younger children were scattered among relatives. Asa was too old to have been a Soldier during the War (though later in the war, men his age were let in), and I found no record of him serving, though his sons Hugh and Samuel both served, and Samuel died in 1864 in Virginia.
I did not find any Equity or Probate records for Asa and Hannah Johnson.
Milly Johnson was born ca 1816/17 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. She was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records, both her and husband Solomon Turbeville. Milly was apparently home with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but she did not seem to be home with her widowed mother in 1830. She might have been married by then, or just living elsewhere.
Milly Johnson married Solomon Turbeville before 1832 in Marion Dist, SC. Solomon was born ca 1809/10 in Marion Dist, SC. I'm not totally sure who his parents were, but one possibility is that he is a son of John Turbeville and Bethany Johnson (daughter of Samuel Johnson), but that is not proven, to my knowledge. He could be a son of Solomon Turbeville Sr instead, but I really have no proof either way. He did live near Solomon Sr in 1840 and his widow in 1850, so that may be a strong clue.
On 2 Apr 1832, Solomon and Milly Turbeville petitioned the other heirs of Benjamin Johnson for a division of the estate. (Marion Co, SC Ordinary's Real Estate Book 1826-1843 page 54, published in the "Pee Dee Queue").
Solomon Turbeville was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC, listed as Solomon "Jr", to distinguish himself from Solomon Turbeville Sr (1780/90), whom he was listed next door to.

Milly Johnson Turbeville apparently died between ca 1854 and 1860, for she was not with Solomon in 1860, and he apparently had a new wife by then, Elsy ---, born ca 1825/26. I don't know when he married Elsy, but apparently in the late 1850's. I don't know her maiden name.
In 1860, Solomon was listed in Marion District, SC with new wife, and several of his children still at home. He was not near any Turbevilles or Johnsons in 1860, though he did have a Perry James (c1842) residing with him, relationship unknown. ** I don't have the 1860 census entry typed up yet.
I did not find Solomon in 1870, so he might have died, or left the area.
Elizabeth Johnson was born in Marion Dist, SC. She was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records. I have not found any record giving her age or birth date, so I don't know when she was born. She may be the unknown daughter born ca 1804/10 or the unknown daughter born ca 1810/15.
If the daughter born ca 1804/10 is Elizabeth, then she married someone or died between 1840 and 1850. If she was the other daughter, born ca 1810/15, then she married or died between 1830 and 1840.
Carey Johnson was born 8 Nov 1820 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. He was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records.
Carey Johnson married Ara Campbell ca 1845, in Marion Dist, SC. See their own page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (c1825). Benjamin Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with Mary in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home with her in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).
This daughter was not with her mother in 1850, so possibly married or dead by then.
This could be either Elizabeth or Mary Johnson, both of whom were named in the 1830-1832 estate records of Benjamin Johnson. I have no additional data on either of them, so I don't know what age group they would be in.
David Johnson was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records. David was apparently home with his widowed mother in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but apparently not with her in 1840. He was old enough then to be off in school, or living with other relatives.
David Johnson married Sarah Bryant ca 1849 in Marion Dist, SC. Sarah was born ca 1826/27 in Marion District, a child of John M. Bryant and Jane Drew (per Sellers).
David and Sarah were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC next to his brother Asa Johnson. Sarah's brother Solomon Bryant was living with them in 1850.

** David and family are listed on the 1880 census in Reeves Township, but I don't have this listing typed up yet.
David Johnson died on 6 Dec 1894 (per Diary of Simeon Campbell) in Marion Co, SC.
I don't know when Sarah Bryant Johnson died, but it was before 6 Jul 1896, for on that date an Appraisement of David's estate mentions that wife Sarah is also dead. (Probate Roll # 2340, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume III", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 252).
Mary Johnson was born in Marion Dist, SC. She was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records. I have not found any record giving her age or birth date, so I don't know when she was born. She may be the unknown daughter born ca 1825 who was with widow Mary in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and with her in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25) but gone by 1850.
This is almost certainly the same person as Mary Jane Johnson (c1825) wife of Kinion W. Cain. Carey Johnson was living with them in 1900 but listed as a boarder. I wondered why he was in their household. I found a death certificate for one of K. W. Cain's sons, and it lists his mother as "Mary Jane Johnson" so I think this is the same Mary who was Benjamin Johnson's daughter.
Martha Johnson was born ca 1826/27 in Marion Dist, SC. She was named as an heir of Benjamin Johnson in Benjamin's estate records. Martha was apparently home with her widowed mother in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and apparently with her in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). She was still home with her mother in 1850, listed as "Martha", age 23.
She was not with her mother in 1860, so perhaps she had married someone, or died by then.
