I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandson of Carey Johnson and Ara Campbell.

Carey Johnson was born 8 Nov 1820 (per his tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, probably in what is now Moody Township in the Temperance Hill vicinity. He is a proven son of Benjamin Johnson and Mary ---. Carey was named in the 1832 estate division of Benjamin Johnson.

Carey's father Benjamin Johnson died ca 1826/1830 in Marion Dist, SC. His estate was divided on 2 Apr 1832, and Carey Johnson was named among the heirs. The land involved was too small to be divided, so it was sold, and the money divided among the heirs. (Marion Co, SC Ordinary's Real Estate Book 1826-1843 pg 54, as published in the Pee Dee Queue)

Carey Johnson married Ara Campbell ca 1840/1846 in Marion Dist, SC. She was a daughter of James Campbell and Mary Barnes.

Carey Johnson and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, SC. He was not listed near any other Johnson families at all, but he was fairly close to the Campbell family (his in-laws), so it seems they lived in Reaves Township at that time, though they could have been in Moody. It is difficult to be sure.

Carey Johnson and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. They still seemed to be in Reaves Township, based on their neighbors.

For the Civil War, Carey Johnson enlisted in Company H, Twenty-third Regiment Infantry as a Private. He was "over age". (Per Sellers, page 623).

Like so many other residents of Reaves Township, Carey Johnson and family were not listed on the 1870 census.

Carey Johnson and family were found in Harlleesville Township for the 1880 census. I don't know why they moved way up there, but that is where they were listed. Ary Campbell Johnson's sister Annis Campbell Perry was residing with them.

They family moved to the Temperance Hill area (Moody Township) after this.

Ara Campbell Johnson died there on 11 Dec 1896 (per her tombstone). She is buried at the Zion Methodist Church. The Rev. Simeon Campbell gives a different death date for her in his Diary. He gives 14 Dec 1896 (page 27). I don't know which is correct.

Carey is listed on the 1900 census in the household of Kinion W. Cain (1827) and Mary Jane (Johnson) Cain (1825), listed as a boarder. Mary Jane is almost certainly his sister though.

Carey Johnson died on 15 Jul 1900 and is buried next to his wife. His marker is laying on the ground and was half buried when I visited there a few years ago.

W.W. Sellers mentioned Carey Johnson in his book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, Esq. 1902, but didn't give very much information, but is interesting, none the less.

Pg 540 "In former times there was another family of Johnsons in the Temperance Hill and Buck Swamp region, of prominence and standing, but by death and emigration they have dwindled to only a few. Old Enos Tart's wife, "Susannah," was a daughter of one of these old Johnsons. The mother of old John and Absalom Turbeville was another daughter, and, doubtless there were others of that generation, but the writer has not been able to get them in any traceable shape. They late Samuel, Carey and David Johnson were descendants, also Hardy and Zeno, and, perhaps others, all from the same stock. These descendants, as known to the writer, are and were good, honest men, respectable citizens all of them. Samuel Johnson, whose wife was a Turbeville and still survives, was a most excellent citizen, died childless. Carey and David had families, more or less large also Hardy and Zeno...."

Children

Carey Johnson and Ara Campbell had several children, mostly proven by the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census records.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson (c1846)

James Benjamin Johnson (1849)

Emaline Johnson (1852)

Celia A. Johnson (1857)

John Ivey Johnson (1860)

Mary Elizabeth Johnson was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. She married Giles Miller (source?) some time after 1860. Not surprisingly, they weren't found on the 1870 census (if they lived in Reaves, they were probably missed).  I didn't find them on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC either.

James Benjamin Johnson was born April 1849 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. He was too young for Civil War service.

He married Adeline Taylor ca 1860/66 in Marion Dist, SC. Like the rest of the family, he was missing in 1870, so probably in that section of Reaves Township the census taker missed.

Like his parents, he was in Harlleesville Township for the 1880 census, though he wasn't listed very near them.

James and family moved back to Reaves Township after 1880, but before 1900.

Emaline Johnson was born 16 Feb 1852 (source?) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census. Like the rest, she was missing in 1870.

She married before 1872 to Albert Lee Turbeville, her 2nd cousin. They were listed on the 1880 census in Harlleesville Township next to her brother James Benjamin Johnson. They had one of James' daughters living with them, listed as a "Niece".

I'm not sure where I got this (probably from John or Charles Turbeville, or from both of them), but I have death dates for Emaline and Albert. She died 6 May 1923, and he died 4 Aug 1925. Both are buried at Old Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery in Marion County.

Celia A. Johnson was born 9 Jun 1857 (per her death certificate, shared with me by John Turbeville) in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census, but like them, was missing in 1870. She is my ancestor. She married her 1st cousin Spencer Alva Campbell ca 1875 in Marion Co, SC.

See their own page for additional information.

John Ivey Johnson was born January 1860 in Marion Dist, SC, presumably in Reaves Township. He was home with his parents in 1860 (listed as 6 months old). Like them, he was missing in 1870. He was with them in 1880. He married ca 1883 to Ella ---. They were listed on the 1900 census in Bethea Township.
