Sherrod Johnson was born ca 1765/70 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a son of Samuel and Mary (---) Johnson. This is proven by Sherrod being named as one of the heirs of Thomas Johnson (his brother) in an 1813 deed (described below). This family resided in the Temperance Hill section of Marion County. "Sherrod" is just one of several spellings for his given name, so I'm not sure which is the "correct" way to spell it. I've seen it listed as "Sharod", "Sharid", "Sherwood" and other ways as well. For the sake of consistency, I'll refer to him as "Sherrod" only, except when quoting records in which case I'll use the spelling as given. Sherrod Johnson married someone prior to 1790. I don't know his wife's name. His apparent wife in 1800 was born before 1755, so that makes her a good bit older than him. Of course it is possible that this woman in 1800 was not his wife, but some other relative. It is also possible that she was simply listed in the wrong age group. Later records show his wife to be born ca 1765/70 same as Sherrod. He may have married more than once, but I don't know for certain yet. Sherrod Johnson was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were. 1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1790 Georgetown Dist, SC Prince George Parish pg 55 Sharod Johnson 1-1-1-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Sherrod JOHNSON (1765/70) 1 Male(s) under 16 (1774/1790) Son? (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B, page 30, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) Sherrod Johnson was listed on the 1800 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed between his father Samuel Johnson and a widow Barbary Johnson (whom I have not yet identified). 1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1800 Marion Dist, SC pg 792 Shared Johnson 21010-30001-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1755-1774) Sherrod JOHNSON (1765/70) 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1784-1790) Son? (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 237, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) On 2 Feb 1804 Shird Johnson and Thomas Gasque Jr and William Johnson (don't know who he is, could be a son) witnessed a deed from Thomas and Elizabeth Gasque to Enos Tart (his brother-in-law). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 174, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) Sherrod Johnson was not listed on the 1809 voter list in Marion District, meaning only that he didn't vote. Sherrod was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC, just two houses from his brother Benjamin Johnson. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 83B Sherod Johnson 22110-20110 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Sharod JOHNSON (1765/70) 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Son? (1804/10) On 25 Aug 1810 Samuel Johnson Sr (his father) sold Sherod Johnson 70 acres on south side of Buck Swamp, for $10. Witnesses were Benjamin Johnson (his brother) and Jesse Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 239, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) Sherrod Johnson was not listed on the 1811 Marion District tax list, meaning (apparently) that he owned no real property, however, as far as I've found, he did have property deeded to him by his father in 1810. He probably should have been listed on this tax list, and perhaps he was, but I just missed him. On 12 Mar 1813, Jesse Moody and wife Nancy Moody sold Sherrod Johnson 100 acres on the south side of Buck Swamp and North East of Ten Mile Bay. Witnesses were Barfield Moody, Sam Smith and Thomas Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 196, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) Sherrod's brother Thomas Johnson died ca 1813, and on 17 Jul 1813, his brothers and sisters sold their interest in his tract of land to Samuel Johnson Jr (who was also an heir). They were listed as his heirs in this fashion: Mary Johnson, Sherid Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, John Turbeville, William Turbeville, Unity Woods, Robert Moody, Jessey Bryan and Enos Tart. They sold their share to Samuel Johnson (Jr) for $305. Witnesses were Thomas Moody and Roger Moody. This deed proves the entire Samuel Johnson family pretty well. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 271, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) Sherod Johnson was listed on the 1814 tax list for Marion District, SC and taxed 14 cents. On 8 Jan 1817 Sherrod Johnson sold Robert Moody 100 acres on North East side of Ten Mile Bay. Witnesses were William Johnson (perhaps a son of Sherrod), and Samuel Johnson (his brother). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 27, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) That is the last record I found for Sherrod Johnson in Marion County. I thought perhaps he died sometime between 1817 and 1820, for I did not find him on the 1820 census. I did not find any Equity or Probate records concerning him so it appears he moved away instead. I found a man of this name on the 1820 census in Warren Co., TN and in 1830 further west in Henderson Co., TN. The name and age is a perfect match. I also discovered other Marion Co., SC families in Henderson County near Sherrod, so it seems this is the same person. I've heard from descendants of the Henderson County Johnsons who also think this is the same Sherrod from Marion, so I'm now convinced of it. Note: On an earlier edition of this web page I had listed that Sherrod died between 1817 and 1820 in Marion leaving an apparent widow Elizabeth Johnson behind. I mentioned that I had no proof she was his widow, but she fit pretty well. I now realize she wasn't his wife at all since he was still alive in 1820 and 1830 when she was already widowed and still in Marion Co., SC. See her page for more on her. Sherrod is listed on the 1820 census in Warren Co., TN. This is in central Tennessee. None of his neighbors were names I recognized from Marion Co., SC. There were plenty of other Johnsons in the county, but none looked familiar. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Warren Co., TN page 283 Sherid Johnson 210101-01101 Slaves=0000-0000 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) Sherrod Johnson (1765/70) 1 male 16-25 (1794/1804) Son? 1 male 10-15 (1804/1810) Son? (1804/10) 0 Slaves By 1830 Sherrod had moved to Henderson County in western Tennessee. He was listed near several Johnsons who may be his sons (or nephews at least) including Sherwood Jr. (1800/10), Samuel (1790/1800), Benjamin Johnson (1790/1800) and William Johnson (1780/90). His "next door neighbor" was Samuel Deer (1760/70). He may be from Marion Co., SC also as there were Deer families there. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Henderson Co., TN page 92 Sherwood Johnson 0101100010000-0010000010000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 60-69 (1760/1770) Sherrod Johnson (1765/70) 1 Male 20-29 (1800/1810) Son? (1765/70) 1 female 10-14 (1815/1820) Daughter? 0 Slaves I couldn't find Sherrod Johnson on the 1840 census. His apparent sons were all still in Henderson County. There was an apparent widow named Mary Johnson (1770/80) listed there. She could be Sherrod's widow but the enumerations aren't a real good match with his 1830 household. However, it is still a good possibility that she was his wife. More research might help. |
Children of Sherrod Johnson and Wife. Sherrod had quite a few children according to the 1790 through 1830 census records. Unfortunately none of them are positively identified. There are several Johnsons living near him in Henderson Co., TN in 1830 who could be his sons including William (1780/90), Benjamin (1790/1800), Sherwood (1800/10), Richard (c1798) and Samuel (1790/1800). One or more of them could be nephews instead. |
Unknown Son (1784/90). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and apparently with him in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90) and apparently still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94). He was not with Sherrod for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then. I don't know for sure, but I suspect this might be "William Johnson" who witnessed one of Sherrod's deeds in 1817, and back in 1804 was a witness along with Sherrod of someone else's deed. This may be the same William Johnson listed near Sherrod on the 1830 census in Henderson Co., TN aged 40-49 (born ca 1780/90). It certainly fits. |
Unknown Daughter (1790/94). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and apparently with him in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1800). She was not with him for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then. |
Unknown Daughter (1790/1800). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) but gone by 1810, so possibly married or dead by then. |

Unknown Son (1794/1800). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and apparently with him in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). He may still be home in 1820 aged 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804) or that could be one of the younger sons. This may be Richard Johnson (c1798) who was in Henderson Co., TN near Sherrod. |

He may still be home in 1820 aged 16-25 (c1794/1804) unless that is the one listed just above. This could be Benjamin Johnson (1790/1800) or Samuel (1790/1800) or Sherrod Jr. (1790/1800) who were all near Sherrod in Henderson Co., TN. |
