[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am not related to Johial H. L. Moore as far as I know. There is a slim possibility that he is related to my ancestor William H. Moore (1726) or my other Moore ancestor Burton Moore (c1756). I am related to Mrs. Moore however: Elizabeth Ann Bryson is my 2nd cousin 6 times removed.
Johial H. L. Moore was born ca 1814/15 (per 1850 census) in Haywood County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). I'm not real sure if "H. L." is actually his middle initials, or it is due to a certain rendering of his name on certain records as "J. H. L. Moore", which may actually be for Jo H iaL Moore, if you see what I mean. "Johial" = "J.H.L.". On the other hand, "H. L." may be in addition to "Johial". It could be either way.
I do knot know who Johial's parents are for sure, but some other researchers list him as a son of James Moore (1779) and Jane Stevenson. This could be very well be true, but I've seen no direct evidence proving it. Johial did name his oldest son "James", but that could be a coincidence. Circumstantial evidence makes James the best candidate to be Johial's father.
Johial would have been about 5 years old by the time of the 1820 census, so he ought to be enumerated in the "Under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). There were quite a few Moores in Haywood in 1820, and most one of them had at least one son this age, so this does not help narrow down his possible parents, however, for the record here are the suspects: B. John Moore (1780/90), James Moore (1799), William Moore (1775/94), Tavener B. Moore (1793) (who's children are proven, and Johial is not one of them), and John Parker Moore (c1765). Of these note that James Moore (1779) is listed, and other researcher identify him as Johial's father.
For the 1830 census, Johial would have been about 15 years old. This means he could be listed in either the 15-19 age group (born ca 1810/15), or the 10-14 grouping (1815/20). Most of the Haywood County Moores were gone by 1830, but two were left there that year, and one of them, Arthur Moore (c1785) had at least one son in each of those applicable age groups. I seriously doubt he is Johial's father for he was not yet living in Haywood when Johial was born there. It would seem likely then that Johial's family was already in Macon County by 1830 (formed 1828 from Haywood). Joseph Moore (1787) (my ancestor) was in Macon County in 1830 and had sons in both those age groups. John Moore (1777) had sons matching both possible age groups. Joab L. Moore (1800) had a male 15-19 with him, but probably too old to be a son of his. James Moore (1779)* had an apparent son 15-19. Of all these "matches", only James (1779) was living in Haywood when Johial was born.
For the 1840 census, Johial Moore would have been about 25 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1810/20). He was old enough to be listed as head of household, but was not listed in Macon County. His supposed father James Moore (1779) was in neighboring Cherokee County in 1840, and he did have an apparent son 20-29 with him, but that could be Albert Moore (1819) instead of Johial. None of the Moores in Macon in 1840 had an apparent son Johial's age living with them, except for Joab L. Moore (1800), but that was probably his brother James (1813). Also, Catherine, widow of Tavener Moore (1793) had 2 boys that age, but her children are proven, and Johial wasn't one of them. Considering Johial's age, he could have been living with anyone as a border, or laborer, etc.
On 2 Sep 1841, Johial Moore obtained a marriage bond in Macon County to marry Elizabeth Bryson. William B. Morgan was bondsman. Elizabeth Ann Bryson was born 17 Mar 1824 (per Family Bible) in Haywood (now Jackson) Co, NC, daughter of Jonathan M. Bryson (1798) and Demaris Griffin.
On 10 Dec 1843, J. H. L. Moore witnessed a deed from West Truitt to John W. Woodfin for land "crossing fork of Silver Run". (Macon Co, NC Deed Book D page 1667 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)
Johial and family were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. They were not listed too near any other Moore families, though Wallace A. Moore (1796) was not too far away, about 15 households.

They were still in Macon for the 1860 census, and closer to Wallace A. Moore (1796). this time. I don't know if they are related, but I'm of the opinion they are not, or at least not closely.

Johial Moore and wife Elizabeth Bryson had 7 children as proven by the various census records. I have tracked them somewhat through the census and marriage records, but have not followed them too far down the line. See the Register Report below for more information on them.
