I (Marty Grant) am not related to Joab L. Moore as far as I know. There is a slim possibility that he is related to my ancestor William H. Moore (1726) or my other Moore ancestor Burton Moore (c1756). There is a much better chance that I'm related to Margaret Patton, but I do not know how she may be connected to my own Patton ancestors.

Joab L. Moore was born 15 Dec 1800 (per tombstone) in Rutherford County, North Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). His middle name may be "Lawrence", but I've not seen any direct evidence for that, but other researchers show him that way. This is his paternal grandmother's maiden name.

According to other researchers, Joab L. Moore is a son of John Moore (1777) and Martha Covington. I have seen no direct evidence of this relationship, but it seems to be correct and supported by circumstantial evidence.

For the 1810 census, Joab would have been about 9 or 10 years old, so probably enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10), or possibly in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1794/1800). His father was listed in Rutherford that year, and did have 2 boys that age (under 10).

For the 1820 census, Joab would have been about 19 or 20 years old, so should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). I have not positively identified his father John Moore on the 1820 census, as there were several men of this name in Rutherford that year.

In the early 1820's, the Moores moved west to what is now Macon County, but was then still part of Haywood County. Macon County was created in 1828.

Joab L. Moore married Margaret Patton on 12 Dec 1826 (source?) in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC. I did not find a marriage record for them, but her maiden name was given on her tombstone. She was born 1 May 1805 (per tombstone) in Buncombe Co, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know who her parents were. I am also a Patton researcher, but a real novice on that line, so I have no information to share yet. Two of Margaret's sons had "P" middle initial, assuming one of them was "Patton" it may be a clue to her parentage: William P. Moore and Andrew P. Moore. Perhaps her father was named William Patton or Andrew Patton. More research is clearly needed. Her 1880 census entry showed both her parents born in Ireland.

Joab was listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was listed not too far from his father. His next door neighbors were Jonathan Field and David D. Snider, and just a couple of houses from George Patton (who was old enough to be Margaret's father). Joab had an "extra" male with him, who could have been one of his younger brothers.

On 23 Jun 1830, Joab L. Moore sold 113 acres to Jane Bradly. Witnesses were M. Patton, B. W. Bell. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 50 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)

Joab L. Moore (and J. L. Moore) was mentioned in numerous deeds in the above book. I am not including all of those entries here, but will note the most interesting of them.

Joab was listed as a voter for the 1835 Congressional Elections. He was listed as "Joab L. Moore", and having voted in Macon County in Franklin Precinct. He voted just two voters ahead of Tilenius Moore (1807), no known relation, unless it is via his mother Jane Patton.

On 25 Apr 1837, George Patton made three deeds to Joab L. Moore. All three were witnessed by A. J. Patton and William Angel. George Patton was old enough to be Joab's father-in-law, but I'm not sure if he that is the nature of their relationship. The first deed was for 168 acres, the second for 132 acres, the third for 120 acres. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 461, 462, 463)

Joab was listed on the 1840 census in Macon County, next door to Moses Addington, his brother-in-law. John Moore (1799) and Tilenius Moore (1807) (brothers to each other, but no relationship to Joab, unless by their mother Jane Patton) were just a few houses away. Joab had a few "extra" males with him, who could be his younger brothers.

On 15 Apr 1842, Joab L. Moore of Cherokee Co, NC sold to Abner Moore (1801) of Macon. There is no known relationship between them. The land was 80 acres in Cherokee County on Muskrats Fork of Shooting Creek (now in Clay Co, NC). I think the residences of these two was reversed, for Abner lived in Cherokee, not Joab, unless it was a temporary move there. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 77)

On 5 Nov 1845, J. L. Moore and William Allman witnessed an interesting deed. It was from John Hall to Thomas P. Moore (1804), no known relation to Joab. The interesting part was that in the deed it stated that it was paid for by Thomas P. Moore, Thomas M. Moore and B. G. Jacobs (Burgess G. Jacobs, no known relationship). I don't know who Thomas M. Moore was. I have not been able to identify him yet. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 24)

On 25 Sep 1846, Joab L. Moore was involved in a mortgage, with Eli McKee of the first part, Joab L. Moore of the second part, and N. S. Jarrett & John Siler of the 3rd part. The deed was witnessed by G. W. J. Moore. This is George W. J. Moore (1818), Joab's half brother. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 140)

Joab and family were listed on the 1850 census in Macon County. They were not near any other Moores. His half brother Benjamin W. Moore was living with him. John Cansler was also there, no known relationship.

They were still in Franklin for the 1880 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Joab L. Moore died on 10 Jul 1886, and Margaret Patton Moore on 13 Apr 1896. They are buried at First Methodist Church in Macon County.

Children

Joab L. Moore and wife Margaret Patton had 9 children as proven by the various census records. I have tracked a couple of them somewhat through the census and marriage records, but have not followed them too far down the line. There is an additional daughter born ca 1825/30 who was with them in 1830 and 1840, but gone by 1850. I don't know who she was yet. See the Register Report below for more information on them.
