I don't know how I'm related to Rhoda Turner, probably a cousin of some sort. Rhoda Turner was born ca 1824/25 per her age on the 1850 census (25). I don't know if she was born a Turner and became a single mother, or if she married some Mr. Turner who died prior to 1850. It appears she was a single mother instead of a widow. If she was born a Turner, she would have been about five years old for the 1830 census, but that could put her in two age groups, either aged 5-9 (ca 1820/25) or aged under 5 (ca 1825/30). Five Turners of the Cat Fish Creek area had apparent daughters that age in 1830: Daniel Turner (c1796) (two girls under 5, unidentified), Henry Turner (c1811) (one girl under 5, identified), Jesse Turner (1800/10) (one girl under 5, unidentified), John Turner (1765) (two girls under 5, unidentified, and one 5-9, identified), and Robert Turner (c1794) (three girls under 5, three 5-9, none identified). When you remove those who are identified, that only removes Henry from consideration as Rhoda's father. Rhoda, if a Turner by birth, would have been about 15 for the 1840 census, so she could be enumerated in the 15-19 age group (a 1820/25) or in the 10-14 group (ca 1825/30). These Turners had one or more girls in those categories: Daniel Turner (c1796) (one 10-14), Henry Turner (c1811) (one 10-14, identified), Robert Turner (c1794) (one 10-14, unidentified) and John Turner (1765) (two 10-14, unidentified, one 15-19 identified). As before, only Henry can be eliminated from consideration. Rhoda Turner had a child early in 1850. If she had married it would have been prior to then, but her Mr. Turner was apparently dead by the 1850 census (as of June 1850). It isn't clear at all whether she was a widow or a single mother since we only have the 1850 census record to go by. It doesn't list marital status. There is no Turner listed on the 1850 Census Mortality Schedule for Marion District (which shows deaths between June 1849 and June 1850). She had two other children just after this which shows she was probably a single mother. For the 1850 census she was in Marion Dist., SC probably somewhere in what later became Kirby Township on the west or south side of Catfish Creek. That ties her to the John and Patience Turner family. Her neighbors in 1850 were the Robert Kilpatrick family on one side, and Nathan Kerby, age 80 on the other. Other neighbors include the William M. George family, Mary Clark family, James Haselden family and the John M. Godbold family. None of these were very near each other back in 1840 except Haselden and Godbold who were just a few houses apart then. None had a Turner family anywhere close by in 1840. The nearest Turner in 1850 was Penny Turner (c1841), 11 houses away: # 1175/1136 Roda Turner, 25 born Marion; John 4/12. Both were listed as white. Rhoda appears to have married Thomas Norton during the 1850's, presumably in Marion Dist., SC. He was born ca 1819/20 in NC per his 1860 census entry. He may be the same Thomas Norton listed on the 1850 census in nearby Richmond Co., NC: # 276/276 Thomas Norton, 30 Laborer, $0, born NC; Sarah 32; Elizabeth, 6; Charles 3; Sarah Loyd 65; Martha 15; Archibald 1 (or 9). All listed as white. If that is him in 1850, his wife Sarah died, and he came to Marion afterwards. I did find Sarah Loyd (his mother-in-law perhaps?) still in Richmond in 1860 with a Covington family. Rhoda and Thomas are listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist., SC next door to Kinion Cain and wife Mary Jane Johnson, and two houses from Henry Berry whom Berry's Crossroads is named. Martin M. Turner (c1820) was just eight houses away: Gum Swamp PO, # 772/772 Thomas Norton 40 Farm Laborer, $0 / 0 born NC; Rody 35; Lot 14; John 12; M. A. Norton 9 female. All listed as mulattoes. I found a Charles Norton age 12, born NC in 1860 Marion Dist., SC living with a Dew family in the same area as Thomas Norton. This may be his son from the 1850 census. For the Civil War, Thomas Norton enlisted as in Company E, 23rd South Carolina Infantry on 28 Sep 1861 in Marion Dist., SC as a Private. He was 46. Some of his service records list him as Thomas H. or T. H. Norton. He was reported as being Absent without Leave for awhile until arrested by the Provost Marshall. I didn't see any record record that shows him dying in the War. Moving to the 1870 census, I wasn't able to find any of them. It doesn't help that the 1870 census is really bad and numerous people are missing who should be listed. There is a Charles Norton listed who could be Thomas's son, but I'm not sure if it is the same one. I found widow Rhoda on the 1880 census in Marion Co., SC. She is next to her son Lott Turner. She was listed as widowed, so Thomas Norton died sometime between 1865 and 1880: Kirby Township, # 58/59 Roda Norton, mulatto, 48 widowed, Keeping House, SC-NC-SC. Listed next to her with new numbers but apparently in the same house: # 59/60 Mary Jane Kirby, 19, daughter, married, SC-SC-SC; George W. 11/12 July, grandson; William 14 son, all listed as mulattoes. Rhoda is listed on the 1900 census in Marion Co., SC with her daughter: Bethea Township # 70/70 Charles Kirby, Head, May 1860, 40 married 22 years, SC-SC-SC Farmer; Mary wife Jan 1861, 39 married 22 years, 5 children born, 4 living; George son July 1879 20; Thomas son Apr 1885 15; Daniel son May 1890 10; Maggie daughter Jan 1895 5; Rhodie Norton, M-in-Law Mar 1830, 70 widowed, 1 child born 1 living; William, Brother, Feb 1865 35 single. I wasn't able to find Rhoda Turner Norton on the 1910 census. She may have died before then, presumably in Marion Co., SC or in what became Dillon County in 1910. |
