It is not unusual to find the same given name used over and over in any particular family, especially common names such as: John, James, William, Samuel, etc. However, the Hensley family seems to have a few unusual preferences (in addition to the common names already mentioned). There are several Hensleys with the not so common names of: Larkin, Enoch, Fielding, Hickman and Ichabod, and of course there are a ton of Benjamins (which is a very common name, but a favorite in the Hensley family). There are a lot of Mackfield Hensleys also, but in this case, all can be traced back to a common ancestor in Mackfield Henslee (c1730).
I have 9 men named "Enoch Hensley" in my files, all born before 1850. Some of them are related to some of the others, but I have not found a common ancestor for all of them yet. "Enoch" is a semi-common name (after Enoch from the Bible), so the use of this name may not be significant in determining relationships between various Hensley groups.
Enoch Hensley (Sr) (c1730/50) of Stafford and Culpeper Co, VA. Wife named "Elizabeth". He is the oldest Enoch Hensley known. He may have had a son named Enoch "Jr" also living in Culpeper County in the 1780-1810 timeframe. Enoch (1775) was also in Culpeper, and somehow related to this Enoch, but not same person as Enoch "Jr".
Enoch Hensley (c1775) of Culpeper Co, VA; Laurens Dist, SC; Jackson and Warren Co, TN; Lawrence Co, AR. Probably named after the elder Enoch Hensley of Culpeper Co, VA who might be his grandfather.
Enoch Hensley (c1786) of Caswell and Rockingham Co, NC; Franklin, Hall and Carroll Co, GA; and Saline Co, AR. Son of David Hensley (1755/65). Don't know who he was named for, perhaps the old Enoch Hensley of Culpeper Co, VA who could be an Uncle.
Enoch W. Hensley (c1810) of SC and Desha Co, AR. May be a son or nephew of Enoch Hensley (c1775), but that is unproven.
Enoch H. Hensley (1822) of Lewis Co, TN. Son of William Hensley (c1785) son of Hickman Hensley (1759). Don't know who this Enoch might have been named for. He was oldest one of this name in the Hickman Hensley family.
Enoch H. Hensley (c1823) of Lewis and Wood Co, VA (WV). Possibly son of George W. Hensley (c1800) of Augusta Co, VA. No idea who he was named for.
Enoch Hensley (c1833) of Carroll Co, GA and Saline Co, AR. Son of Mackfield Hensley (c1810). Probably named for his Uncle Enoch Hensley (c1786)
Enoch Hensley (c1842) of Lewis Co, TN. Son of James F. Hensley (c1790) son of Hickman Hensley (1759). Probably named for his 1st cousin Enoch H. Hensley (1822).
Enoch Hensley (c1848) of Yancey and Madison Co, NC. Son of Amos Hensley (c1803). Possibly named after 1st cousin Enoch H. Hensley (c1823).
I have nine men named "Fielding Hensley" in my files, all born before 1860. Several of them are from the same families, but a few of them don't seem related to the rest.
Fielding Hensley (c1761) of Buckingham, Washington and Scott Co, VA. This is the eldest Fielding, for whom several of the following were probably named.
Fielding Hensley (c1790/94) of Montgomery Co, KY. Son of Joseph Hensley (1750/60), who is probably brother of Fielding Hensley (c1761). So it seems likely he was named for his Uncle.
Fielding Hensley (c1813) of Yancey Co, NC. Don't know his parents.
Fielding Hensley (c1829) of Van Buren Co, AR. Son of Russell Hensley (c1804).
Fielding Hensley (c1833) of Montgomery and Breathitt Co, KY son of William Hensley (c1815), son of Fielding Hensley (c1790/94). Obviously named for his grandfather.
Fielding Hensley (c1834) of Yancey Co, NC and Harlan Co, KY, son of Samuel Hensley (c1805).
Fielding Hampton Hensley (c1842) of Cherokee Co, NC (often spelled "Fielden"). Son of Ralzamore M. Hensley (c1814). I can't imagine who this Fielding was named after.
Fielding Hensley (c1850) of Yancey Co, NC and Harlan Co, KY, son of Enos Hensley (c1816).
Fielding Hensley (c1851) of IL and Letcher Co, KY. Son of John Hensley (c1827), who is related to the Buncombe Co, NC Hensleys.
I have 5 men named "Hickman Hensley" in my files, all born before 1850. They all seem to be related to old Hickman Hensley (1759), so this name is easily explained.
Hickman Hensley (1759) of Henry Co, VA; Burke, Buncombe and Yancey Co, NC; and Hickman (now Lewis) Co, TN. Hickman was a son of Benjamin Hensley and Elizabeth (---). Benjamin was a son of Benjamin Hensley and Elizabeth Hickman, and it is obvious that Hickman Hensley was named for his grandmother.
Hickman M. Hensley (c1804) of Yancey and Madison Co, NC. Son of Colbert Hensley (c1760/65). He was most likely named after his Uncle Hickman Hensley (1759).
Hickman Hensley (c1806) of NC; Independence Co, AR; Tishomingo Co, MS and Jack Co, TX. Son of Lucinda Hensley (c1781) who may be a sister-in-law of Hickman Hensley (1759).
Hickman Hensley (c1815) of Lewis Co, TN and Effingham Co, VA. Parents unknown, but seems to be a grandson or at least nephew of Hickman Hensley (1759).
Hickman Hensley (c1843) of Tishomingo Co, MS. Son of Hickman Hensley (c1806).
There are 4 (or 5) men of this name in the Hensley family. Two of them have the same middle initial of "C", which leads to the idea that their name might have been "Ichabod Crane Hensley", (after the "Sleepy Hollow character) but there is a serious flaw with that theory, in that the book was written long after these men were born, so their name pre-dates the character. These men all seem to have a common origin, but they are not proven to be related to each other. Three of them were from the Washington-Scott Co, VA area originally.
Ichabod C. Hensley (no dates, but born ca 1780-1805 this Ichabod is a son of Larkin Hensley (1761-1805), but he has not been identified yet. He is undoubtedly the same person as one of the following Ichabods, but I don't know which one.
Ichabod Hensley (1780/83) of Washington Co, VA; Knox Co, TN and Morgan Co, AL. This could be the son of Larkin (1761), but that isn't proven. He was closely related to him though I'm sure.
Ichabod C. Hensley (1790/92) of Washington and Scott Co, VA; Knox and Hardeman Co, TN and Boone Co, MO. This Ichabod is said to be a son of Samuel Hensley (1767) and Frances Livingston, but I don't know what proof there is of that.
Ichabod C. Hensley (c1806) of Clay Co, IL and Cabell Co, VA (WV). Possibly a son of Solomon Hensley (1779), but that isn't proven.
Ichabod Hensley (c1814) of Scott Co, VA. Son of Fielding Hensley (c1761). He is probably named for one of the elder Ichabods from this same county.
I have 7 men named "Larkin Hensley" in my files (all born before 1850). Are they all related? It seems a reasonable assumption, but I can't prove connections between all of them. They may all have a common ancestor in Virginia.
Three of these are part of the Larkin Hensley (1779) family. Three more are part of the Enoch Hensley (1775) family, leaving one, my Larkin Hensley (1761) unconnected to either of the other two sets of Larkins. The oldest of this name was my ancestor Larkin, born ca 1761. He could be the namesake for the others, but I don't know how they would have known each other.
Check out their own pages for more information:
Larkin Hensley (c1761-c1806) of Washington and Scott Co, VA. He is the oldest, so I don't know who he was named for.
Larkin Hensley (1779-1867) of Burke and Buncombe Co, NC; Hickman and Lewis Co, TN. Possibly named after Larkin (c1761) if they were 1st cousins (which is quite possible).
Larkin Hensley (c1800) of Laurens Dist, SC; Jackson and Rutherford Co, TN; and Lawrence and Pulaski Co, AR. Son of Enoch Hensley (1775), no known connection to any of the earlier Larkins.
Larkin T. Hensley (c1832) of Lewis Co, TN. (son or grandson of Larkin Hensley-1779). Obviously named for his grandfather.
Larkin M. Hensley (c1837) of Lawrence Co, AR. Son of Samuel Hensley (c1802). Probably named for Uncle Larkin Hensley (c1800).
Larkin F. Hensley (c1838) of Lewis Co, TN. Son of James F. Hensley (c1810) (son of Larkin Hensley-1779). Obviously named for grandfather.
Larkin F. Hensley (c1846) of Lawrence and Pulaski Co, AR. Son of Larkin Hensley (c1800). Obviously named for father.
